[Argentina] La Rioja to San Fan

31st of December 2011 (Saturday)

Distnace:570キロ
Departure time:8:30am
Arrival time:17:00pm
Weather:晴れ Blue Skies
Temperature:38℃

It's one more leg until San Rafael, the city that is on this year's in the Dakar Rally. route
But today, I'm headed for San Fan, a city located before San Rafael.

When I was researching today's journey in the morning, I realised that there lies apparently a beautiful national park on the way.
With a little luck, one might be able to see the condors the area is famous for.

When I was researching today's journey in the morning, I realised that there lies apparently a beautiful national park on the way.
With a little luck, one might be able to see the condors the area is famous for.

Entering the Taranpaya National Park!
DSC07319

When I get to see these strange rocks left and right of the road, and get to see the strange looking mountains at a distance, the my mood rises.

Arrival at the gates!
DSC07320

Oh, adequate for a place where dinosaur bones had been excavated, I'm greeted by a giant replica.

Then, asking repeatedly and in detail at the park reception, it's not allowed to enter the park with my bike, are any other personal transport means for that matter, and hence there is no other way then to use the ranger's bus.

Apparently, the time required is some 2 hours. So, in view of today's travelling distance of close to 600 kilometres, I have to give up on the idea of entering the park altogether.

And then there is a problem.
I thought to refuel in a petrol station along the way, but when I get there it turns out that there is no petrol!

Is there such a thing as a chronic lack of petrol supply in the Argentina country side?
Since the state of the roads is good, it's possible to drive at around 120 to 130 km/h, which should have an effect:
At higher speed, the overall fuel consumption goes down.

I went around it a number of times, but indeed there wasn't any petrol.
If I drive to a place until I run out of petrol and have to stop there, I won't be able to meet up with the Dakar race.
No matter what, I want to go on.

If I believe the fuel stand, I can drive another 150 kilometres.
The problem is, that today's destination San Fan is another 160km away.

If this really turns out that way, I head off thinking that if I do all I can to make the petrol as long as possible, this should work out somehow or other.

And when there were 70 kilometres left until today's destination, the fuel stand shows that I have enough petrol for another 100 kilometres.
Oh, it seems this will work out after all.

… but as soon as I had thought to be lucky, the engine makes a 'popo, popo' noise.

And instantly I feel that the engine doesn't pull properly.

This announces that I'm running out of petrol altogether.

Hmm, will I be able to drive for another 100 kilometre?!

And after the same symptoms repeated a number of times … the engine finally stopped entirely.
DSC07326

The temperature is at 38°C boiling hot.

It's a road that cuts through a wasteland area in the middle of a desert.

Should I go on in this road and push the bike?

Rather tough …!

There are supposed to be another 60 kilometres until the city...

And the scary thing is that along this road there are infinitely few vehicles coming along.

No good, no good at all!

Unexpectedly running out of petrol on New Year's Eve in South America!. I once more turned the starter – and the engine comes back to life!

There is still a little bit petrol left in the tank it seems.

Repeatedly turning the engine back on, I finally managed to drive another 10 kilometres or so.

And along the way, I got to see a suddenly a isolated single shop.

It's an eatery in the middle of nowhere.

As I ask the middle aged guy standing next to the eatery if by chance he would be willing to sell me some petrol he asks: 'how much'?

As I say 'Some three litres …' he says 'wait a moment'!

Oh, Will they get me indeed some petrol?

This family's kids kindly brought me the petrol in pet bottles!
DSC07324

(Note: The lens cover doesn't work properly any more, and doesn't fully open)

Thank you so much!

I refuel the dust covered bike.
DSC07323

I'm saved.
Also this time, a miracle occurred and I got saved.
God, Buddah, this must be thanks to everyone's prayer for my safety.

Today, out of nowhere a river appeared, and resigned to what was necessary I had get into the water and cross it.
I didn't fall and all went well, however, half of my body and the whole bike got muddy.

Once I get to the accommodation, I will have to clean my clothes and the boots up.

And then, it was like that yesterday but even today on the way, I ask myself now and again 'Will you go and see Dakar?'

This would be the highlight of the whole country, considering that the race crosses this area and is internationally famous.
写真

The town magazine I found in the hotel lobby.

Tomorrow, I will participate in the Dakar race … not, but rather will be headed for San Rafael, one of the principle cities to see race.

[Argentina] Tucumán to La Rioja

Friday, December 30th, 2011
Distance: 310 kilometers
Departure: 09:30
Arrival: 15:00
Weather: Cloudy, but then rainy and sunny later on
Temperature: Over 36°C?

I left Tucumán this morning.  It was raining very hard.

1

I thought that there was an advertising car outside when I heard a loud noise. It was a horse-drawn carriage with a big speaker.
A horse is a must in this town.

It became even hotter when I opened the shield of my helmet!
This happens when the temperature goes higher than a human’s body heat. It happened when I was driving in China, too.

2

It felt so good underneath the blue summer sky!!

When I went to a gas station, I was told that they didn’t have any gas.
I went to the gas station in the next town. There was a long waiting line of bikes, cars, and trucks.

I kept going until I saw another gas station, but this one had a long line, too. I went to the station where there was no line, but then I was told that they didn’t have any gas either.
I decided to go back to the one that had the long line.
I was scared that they wouldn’t have enough gas for me.

3

I was able to get gas there. I felt so relieved.

It is bike heaven in Argentina.
I see many riders in South America, but the difference is that there are many local women riders in Argentina.

They stopped next to me when I was at a red traffic light.

4

The engine of the bike was exposed. It had no fairings.
The bike looked like it would go fast, but it also looked like it would be short-lived.

I arrived in La Rioja!
I went for a walk after I unloaded my stuff at the hotel.

5

Siesta (long lunch) was thoroughgoing here.
It looked like a ghost town.

6

7

8

9

It really did look like a ghost town…

10

Dogs here were also taking part in the siesta.

This store was open.

11

I actually went in this shop yesterday. It was an ice cream shop, and they had delicious, reasonably-priced ice cream in good portions. ^^

12

There was a cathedral in an open area.

They had main altar painted with beautiful frescos.

13

There was nobody in there.
I think that this was my first time that I had gone into an empty church.

I went for dinner at eight o’clock pm after I went back to the hotel.
This time, there were many people and cars in the town!

14

I remembered a story about how some country towns had throughout siestas in Spain. Mica-san (whom I met in Madrid, Spain) told me about it. He did many things for me while I was there.

I was surprised that there was a town in Argentina that has throughout siestas.

I collected some information about Dakar Rally when I returned to my hotel.
I managed to find out that the location of the race was close to my hotel.

I’m so excited!
Now I know how the people who go see the “Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race” from long distances feel. (Haha)

He was a good looking, kind waiter at the cafeteria next to my hotel.
He sometimes translated for me because he was one of the few people who could speak English.

I did something bad.
I lost my credit card!
I think I forgot to get it back from the cashier when I left a restaurant for lunch yesterday.
I had no choice other than to stop my card and go through a renewal process.
My credit card company, AMEX, has good customer support. I recommend them to everybody because of their good quality service!

Today was the second time to travel since I came to Argentina.

DSC07273

It felt so good to be riding because of the good road condition. The lower altitude helped, too, by decreasing the temperature at 27 degrees.

However, as I entered the town Tucumán, the temperature increased to over 30 degrees. It was hot!
It’s been a long time since it’s been this hot..
It made me realize that I was in a place totally opposite from Japan.

There aren’t any special sights to see in Tucumán. However, this is the place that Marco (from the Japanese anime series 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother) finally met his mother. I was very moved by that scene.

I needed to go to the dealer shop for some bike maintenance before I headed to the station where Marco got off the train.

DSC07295

It was a very rare to see a dealer shop, especially for a bike.
There was another dealer shop for four-wheel vehicles about two kilometers away from here.

I took my bike to the work shop and waited for them to finish their siesta (long lunch).
Spanish culture is the majority here.
They don’t have any end of year and New Year holidays. They have a Christmas holiday though.
It seems like they are open on the 29th and 30th.

I asked them to change my oil and break pad. I also asked them to fix my luggage case because the leaking was getting worse.

I also asked them to look at the bent stay on the luggage case. It got bent from several falls and it was coming down a little.

After I waited for a while, the mechanic came out looking downwards.

He said that he cracked the luggage case while he was trying to fix it. He put too much strength onto it.

What?! The news made me feel blue…

If this was in Japan, they’d take full responsibility and fix it. But I’m in South America…

“I think you should be okay,” he said. (-_-‘)

But then again, the stay of my luggage case was beginning to become weak over the many falls.

They offered to fix it tomorrow, but I told them not to worry about it because I had to leave.
There was no choice but to find a welding shop sometime along the way.

I couldn’t get mad at them because they did work hard on my bike. They also offered me a hat and a sticker.

I realized with a deep feeling that I went to so many dealer shops around the world.

「Vale!

Argentina~ Salta Day 2

My plan for today is to go to the insurance company office to get the
insurance policy, and to upload my blog.

About obtaining the Brazil visa, I realized the appointment day will
be on New Year's eve.
Is the consulate by the border open on such a day?

I asked Mr.Dososhin, and I was told to ask the consulate office.

It looks like I need to call the consulate here in Salta tomorrow instead.

ww
So I am staying in Salta for 4 days.

Tupiza (Bolivia) - Salta (Argentina) Trip

Sunday, December 25th, 2011
Distance: 490 km
Starting time: 8:30
Arrival time: 16:00
Weather: Rain, fine later
Temperature: 20℃

I leave the town of Tupiza in the rain it sometimes rains incessantly strongly.
Bad road in Bolivia by yesterday is not sound true bad but a beautiful pavement road continues.

Otchan movement of the handle to the repair shop says it is, but it can be moved ifthe worst pace.

I reached Bijan Son of the town of the border with Argentina in about 1 hour.
I finished the procedure by the side of both countries, and passed safely!

Good-bye, Bolivia!  Hello!! Argentina!!!

When I come into Argentina, atmosphere has been changed suddenly!
First of all, road is good and different from passed South American countries.
I have a feeling like advanced nations as I've heard.

And, Suddenly  bourgeois touring riders are increase like I was wondering where do they come from?!
Harley-Davidson, BMW, big-bike of Yamaha and also female riders.
It's like a cultural shock.

I arrived in Salta of the destination today at about 500 km of real run favorable condition.
I consider about the maintenance of my motorbike, so I skip to drop by Jujuy though I was planning before.

"HOTEL Colonial" called a first-class hotel and a handy price was published at "Chikyu no Arukikata", and when I called at there, the room which faces the open space of the center of a town at 330 Argentine pesos (6000 yen) was vacant, so I checked in.
1

Salta is completely Europe!
2

It's completely different scenery from other South American countries!
It's so natty!!

But since it was refined, I heard that people of Argentina are high-handed, so I am little worried.
I thought that it's already been evening so I need look for a motorbike shop tomorrow, then I found a motorbike of BMW in front of the hotel.
I asked a group of gentle men near the bike, and it's one of them motorbike.
A guy whose name is Aldo who has Big-bike of Yamaha and can speak English corresponded to me and listened sincerely what I tell him. He strongly recommended 4 shops including BMW dealer and one shop which there is the best mechanic even he's middle-aged, and told me those addresses and phone numbers.

And he said that "We are bikers so we are borothers." and told me his phone number, email address and FaceBook. And also he said "if you need any help in Argentina, please call me.". He is kind to the foreigner of the first meeting. *impressed*
3

3 of them are bikers.
Left guy is Aldo. The guy of middle is owner of BMW bike.

I could crash into kindness and  tenderness of Argentina! *happy*

Although I went to an aimed Chinese restaurant, it's closed.
Even worth, it is Sunday and also Christmas, so anywhere is closed.
Then I sat at one open restaurant for tourists face to the open space.

4

The cathedral lit up by twilight is beautiful.

5

Speaking of Argentina, it is a steak!!!!

Hey hey hey!!!
It's really yummy!!!!

It's right taste which I can totally agree with that Argentina says steak is the staple food.
I can have this every day.
I don't have it though.

I started conversation with 2 gentle men next my seat.
6

This man whose name is Fabian was very funny like a comedian.
7

When we have conversation, we use an application of translation by our smart phone.
It became a convenient time!

Another man is Héctor. He is a poet.
8

That's just what I'd expect from Argentina!
He sells his poems and he showed me his file.

9

Then he specially game me the CD-ROM which his poems are in!
And he treated me a beer.

After that, they asked me to go dancing and have beer. For a change, I said OK and let's go!then they said let's start at 2 am.
The night in Argentina is so long.
Their dinner time starts from 22:00.

So I refused politely.

HOTEL MITURU

Words cannot describe these pictures.

I just couldn’t believe that I was actually there.

These views are like heaven, and are only available in certain conditions.

It becomes visible when a still thin layer of water on the ground evaporates.

And this happens only in the rainy season.

I was very moved yesterday, but today was 100 times better.

I have to admit that I did not believe it completely when I reached South America.  Before I started the journey, and middle of my journey I never thought I would get here.

However, I did arrive here that is 70,000 kilometers away from Japan at last.

Amazingly, I met people who were willing to take pictures of me riding on my journey; the best highlighted spot, Uyuni.  This is nothing but miracle.

This car is my guide and saved my life.

Mr. Tsukada continued taking pictures willingly for me.

37

At this point… tear… tear…

This is very first time to ride with a Japanese person behind me on my bike on my journey.

I won’t forget this moment (tandem) for the rest of my life.
38

“Please watch with HD” Mr. Tsukada said while he was filming.

This is “Island of the fish” we arrived after driving 80 kilometers to west from the hotel; it is at the edge of salt flat.

The island has coupe thousand wild cacti.

Three of us climbed up to the top of the island.
There were many coral rocks on the ground, and it’s telling us that this area was once an ocean.
This was the moment that I felt like I experienced history while I was completely surrounded by white salt flat.

We headed to Tunupa Volcano next.
This was located on north side of salt flat.
Four wheel drive car and a silver bike accomplished driving more than 100 kilometers while passing each other.

With Mr. and Mrs. Tsukada and also Oscar who saved my life.
We made a strong promise to meet each other again when we visit Bolivia.

There is Tunupa Volcano and village at the foot of the mountain in the background.
I was told that there was a hiking trail to top of the mountain, two mummies were left there.
We decided not go in there since we have a tight schedule.

There were many deep puddles in this area since it is at the foot of mountain and receives a lot of rain.
44

We decided to go back to our hotel, so drove about 100 kilometers without stopping.
Surprisingly, I drove about 270 kilometers on the salt flat in only two days.

My bike was covered with salt.
*No one could expect the things, because of this situation, would happen later.

Oscar offered to go get my bike washed before I leave Uyuni tomorrow.
He is such a kind person.

We saw one head light coming towards to us when we went out to salt flat in the evening.

It was a bike.

This is a common rule among riders that we parked our bike next to each other, and got off our bikes, and shook hands firmly.

We started talking about our journey.

Mr. Tsukada who is a rider in Japan said the following when he saw us talking

“Riders are mysterious.  This situation won’t happen if both of you were in cars!”

Exactly! I love this moment.
We respect each other as riders, praying for each other’s good luck.  We took a picture.

He is a Swedish rider, Marcus.
He’s been filming with his camera that is attached to his helmet while he’s riding.  He is broadcasting his movie on YouTube.
He was really funny guy.
I hope that I will see him somewhere again.

We went to see the salt production which we haven’t seen yet.  They were so kind to take me there.

Workers were packing salt in a bag by hand in a small warehouse.
This nostalgic view is another taste of Uyuni.

Uyuni was the best of the best spot in my journey. By this miracle meeting, this journey was filled with blight salt flakes on the pure salt flats.

I was not sure who I was more thankful for.  However, I was grateful that I received gifts for living in this world.  I just felt so grateful for everything today.

【Bolivia】 Oruro to Uyuni

December 22nd, 2011 (Thursday)
Distance: 310 kilometers
Departure: 07:00
Arrival: 13:00
Weather: Sunny

I woke up early with excitement to head to Uyuni today.
From the capital La Paz to Oruro are suppose to have a good road conditions according to most of the information I received.  However, I became nervous because the rest of the road after Oruro is supposed to get bad.

When I asked the hotel staff after I parked my bike, if it’s ok to leave at 6:00 am tomorrow morning?  “It’s no, problem”.  The hotel staff replied.

I was surprised when I went to the parking lot after checking out of the hotel.
There were many cars parked behind my bike, so I couldn’t get out!

I asked the hotel staff to move all the cars.  They called the owners of the cars, and sleepy owners came outside to move their cars.
Some people complained to me, but I didn’t mind.

I managed to leave Oruro by 7:00am!

The road became dirt as the information stated, after I drove for while.
no title

I didn’t mind the hard dirt, but I had to be cautious in the deep sand area.

What?!
It’s river!  Yes, a river!
I haven’t seen a river this vast since Africa!
Some roads were underwater because of the rainy season.

1

There were some trucks that couldn’t move on the other side of the river.  They seemed like they were waiting for the chance to cross the river.

One of the truck drivers told me where to cross, while I was thinking what I needed to do.

There was an area that it looked not deep at glance.  I was going just go with my bike trusting the driver.  However, I decided to make sure by wading in like I did in Africa just in case.

When I took the 10th step in to the river…

ズボッ!!Oh No!

My foot got stuck!

It was a muddy area because of the soft sand.

I had a hard time to pull my foot out of it.

Water and sand started coming inside of my boot.

It took for while to pull my foot out and I managed to go back to the shore where I started from.

It would be a really bad situation if I went with my bike.

It is always good thing to check it by walking.

One of the truck drivers advised me to use the railroad next.  (On the left side of the picture)

I saw some local people pushing a bicycle on the railroad.

I found out that the size of the railroad was the only area I could use to cross the river when I took a closer look.
On top of that, the gap of each railroad tie was wide.  If I miss the step, that’s it.
A train might come while I’m crossing?!

Meanwhile, one truck and an ATV crossed the river.
Both vehicles crossed the same area.
I walked the same area in the river.  The depth was below the knees, and the ground was hard and firm.

The stream was not fast, so I decided to cross in this area.

I crossed the river successfully while truck drivers were looking at me with support!

I raised my hand to greet them, and head to Uyuni.

The road conditions became worse, it was a washboard.  My driving pace decreased.

However, the distance was not too far, so I took my time to drive.

I encountered Lamas and Alpacas at 4,000 meters.  I also saw wiled Vicunas.  Vicunas were running fast like deer unlike Lamas and Alpacas.  I had fun racing them with my bike.

Winding up and down and right and left on dirt made me tired.

I saw the edge of while mother earth after I drove the harsh road conditions.

It is a Salar de Uyuni!

At this moment, my tiredness disappeared!

I continued driving about 30 kilometers and my destination was getting closer.
My destination was a salt hotel build on top of hill, and it is called “Hotel Luna Salada”.

I came to the place with a sign of the hotel, next to dirt express way.
According to GPS, the hotel is supposed to be at 90 degrees east from where I was.
I saw slight trace of car in middle of the desert.
Do I need to follow this path!?
It looked like I didn’t have a choice even if the road didn’t look like a road.
I need to cross over the railroad track to go to the hotel.

The hotel was getting closer, it was in my view!
2

I made it!

3

The hotel was located on the hill, and it was about three to four kilometers away from the white mother earth.
I thought someone would come out to greet me since I made the reservation beforehand. However, there was nobody. No one came out when I went inside and kept calling.
I started unloading my gear off the bike, and eating some snacks I had for lunch while sitting on the bench outside of the hotel.  When I about to finished eating, the hotel staff came out of nowhere.

I was able to check in safely!
I felt relieved.

I wanted to go see salt lake since I got to the destination earlier than I thought!
However, I was not sure where to start since salt lake was huge.

I asked the hotel staff where the recommended places in salt lake were, but they didn’t speak English.

I was not expecting this situation.
There are some islands in salt lake that it is good for sightseeing, but how I’m going to get there?

Nothing is going to happen even if I stay here and think, so I decided to get on my bike and head to the white mother earth!

Ohhhh!

This is really salt mother earth!!

It was different from Salt Flats in Utah, USA!
Not only vast, but also it has a South American characteristic it is located on high field, with pure air, and a deep blue sky.

Bolivia] Oruro to Uyuni(More)

The size is 100 kilometers to south and north, and 250 kilometers to east and west.
It has not only the largest amount of salt in the world, but also more than half of amount of lithium on the earth  for electric cars is buried here.

There were many spots that were covered by water.  I needed to go further to see the area that it was completely dry and a white mother earth.

I saw some cars and people in salt lake, and thought they were travelers.  However, they were mining salt.

I couldn’t see anybody and anything when I looked forward.
I was very nervous, but I kept going.

The reason why I was nervous was because there were neither roads nor signs.

It would be better if I have the point that travelers usually go in my GPS.   I didn’t even have that.
I started thinking about having bad situation like getting stuck in mud at salt lake.  This is the hard part when I travel by myself.

While I kept driving thinking about this kind of thing, I saw a clean white Toyota track coming towards to me.  It stopped right next to me.

運転手が窓を開けて「May I help you?(何か困っている?)」
The driver rolled down the window and said to me, “May I help you?”

His voice was like an angel’s voice in this situation.

And I found out that there was a Japanese couple in his car!
The driver was a Japanese travel guide, Oscar.
He was very handsome; he looked like the combination of Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves.

He showed me the way of the place I wanted to go in my GPS.
This picture was taken by Mr. Tsukada who was a husband of the Japanese couple.

3-1

Surprisingly, Mr. and Mrs. Tsukada were both riders loved bikes.  Mr. Tsukada is a bike rider, and Mrs. Tsukada got a bike license recently because of his influence.

Oscar was also a rider and loved bikes.

It was a miracle to meet group of people who all love bikes.  They were very kind to me.
As we talked more, we found out that we were all staying in the same hotel.

そして、
And also,

“We are going to tour in Salt Lake tomorrow.  Why don’t you join us?  You are welcome to follow our car”.  They said.

Another angel’s voice!  AWwwww

I accepted their kind offer and will join them tomorrow.
We said good bye to each other.

I arrived in the renowned hotel where in salt lake, Playa Blanca, after I drove the direction that Oscar showed me.
This was different from our hotel.  Our hotel is on the top of the hill.

4

This hotel lingered in the pure mother earth, and built with salt except for the roof.
It is very popular hotel, but it was crumbling.  To tell the truth I didn’t want stay there.

There were many flags in front of the hotel.
5

Yay!
I made it to Uyuni!!
When I saw the Japanese flag, something warm inside me welled up.

I arrived in the area where it was surrounded by salt 360 degrees.  I was in middle of the mother earth.

It’s a self picture time!!

What a wonderful feeling!!!

Ohhh!!! I can’t describe this wonderful feeling!!!

I accepted Mr. and Mrs. Tsukada’s offer, and had a dinner with them.
We were excited to find out that we had a friend that we all knew!
I was moved by their great personality.

It’s been awhile since I opened wine.  We had a delicious dinner while watching the breathtaking sunset.

I met great people and my first day in Uyuni was wonderful!
I’m looking forward tomorrow.

I decided to approach this child while I was walking around the town.

I think that this interview was the one that captured the true messages from Bolivia. All ideas that I had about all children having dreams was crushed during this interview. All the while, I was in culture shock.

The first girl, Daniela, could read well and understood all my questions. However, to all of my questions, her answer was “No.”
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the backgrounds of the children I interview. This interview made me deeply sad inside, because I had just found out that there are environments where people cannot have freedom and hope.
This is the present situation of some countries in the world.
I realized, once again, how hard their situation was when I interviewed the child in the 49th country.

The second child was named Gabriela. I was able to see that she was spending quality time with her relatives. However, she stayed home on the weekdays, not even going to school, to help her parents.
This is why she had a strong dream about happiness. She gave me her message.
I found out that the place they lived in was a very poor area. When she mentioned that her happiness is to give something to others, I thought it was based on their beliefs.

90% of the cars in Bolivia are made in Japan, but both children answered no to my question about Japan.
I can’t help but thinking that this symbolizes how in Bolivia, there is a tremendous gap between the rich and the poor. There is also a persistence of political unrest. This is one of the reasons why children in Bolivia can’t afford to look at their surroundings and gain knowledge.

I sincerely hope that everyone will have a fair opportunity and have a happy Christmas with a smile.
