[Chile] Osorno - Chillan Trip

Monday, 30th January, 2012

Distance: 530 km
Starting time: 9:40
Arrival time: 17:20
Weather: Rain then fair
Temperature: 15-28℃

It is heavy raining from the morning!
I say I don't care at all like trying to act strong and start today.

It is advanced nation, Chile.IMGP0543

The high way which is road to Santiago is nice.

But there is a tollgate periodically and motorbikes are collected like 6 pesos (100 yen).
I paid about 5 times only today?!

Although I go up to north over 300 km from Osorno, the weather is not recovered at all. And far from it, sometimes it is intense rainfall.
IMGP0544

Since other vehicles do not have high visibility either, they go on by blinking a hazard.

There are many as good cars as the car which runs in Chile is close to Japan.
Opportunities decreased that I see dilapidated cars.

Of course I don't need about gas either.
It is periodically scattered about service areas where equipment is splendid.

I arrived at Chillan.
It lifted and recovered the weather. And the temperature is getting high also.

IMGP0546

Although there is nothing special here, here is the middle place between Osorno and Santiago, so I decided to stay this town.

I filled gas when I enter the town, and I asked one lady who is fun and kind at the gas station about a hotel.
I went to the hotel which the lady told me but there were no rooms.
And I went to another hotel which the hotel person told me but it was full too.
And I asked the hotel person about other hotels in this town but she said there is no more hotel in this town.

What? Really?

I was badly-off for a room then the middle age lady who is like a manager came and said "why don't you give that room for him?", and I could have a single room.
Oh, here it is.
She helped me.

Finally I will go to Santiago where is the goal of South America.
The impression has already started in my heart since today's ride.

Lots of feelings will come out from me tomorrow.

Master Yamada,
You are already in Italy now, and I can read the blog and be ascertained of your well being.
As for me, it has been decided that I will very soon, in July, to the stage.
Even though being a single mother household, I will be able to pay for a private school, and to lead a life I enjoy. I'm truly grateful for this. Thank you for your leadership.
I give 1000 yen towards this challenge.
Gome, 2011-05-11 07:17:15

This is a huge undertaking. I support this.
I give 10'000 yen towards this challenge.
Crystal, 2011-05-10 23:34:29

With everyone's support, the goal post of this 4th continent has come in sight.
I will continue still for just a little bit longer.
And I pray that the contributed total amount will continue to increase.

[Argentina] Esquel – San Carlos de Bariloche

28th January, 2012 (Saturday)
Distance:241Km
Departure:10:30
Arrival:15:30
Weather:Blue skies with occasional showers
Temperature:13

Well, today I'm on may way to the famous site seeing town Bariloche.

Departure preparations in the hotel's parking lot.
1

Since the hinges of the left pannier case are broken, I have to tie it down the lid down with a belt.

That's the belt that, despite me saying that I didn't need it, I was pressured to take with me by the lady at the BWM dealer in Lima replying: 'Well, take it anyway'.
Looking at this, I'm grateful for her insistence.

Since I can't close the lock, I'm not feeling very comfortable with it every time it starts to rain.

Then: tyre pressure check.

Hmmm, it seems to be loosing air ...

But it's about half.
From the place where I mended the tyre there still leaks in fact a little bit of air.

But being prepared is the best of all things, hence I will have it mended right here in Esquel.

When I go to the tyre shop I was told of by the owner of the hotel, it's closed.
The place shown by the closest petrol station is also closed.
Oh yes, of course, today is Saturday!
Yet, at the outskirts of town I discover a tyre shop that is open!

Inside there were 3 guys that looked like they'd in the mood to mend my tyre, but the one that looked like the most senior among them rejected saying [We don't do bikes here!]

Can't be helped then. I then decided that I'd be moving on while continuously refilling the air in the tyre.

I leave the town, and after only a little bit of time it suddenly gets really cold.

I have to stop to get into my rein gear.
2

The scenery is beautiful, but the wind is … rather strong.
The bike feels like it is about to fall over.

And in that moment Jeremy, a crazy English man, comes to my mind. We had been driving together down along the West coast, and he had the habit of smoking self-rolled cigarettes. For the whole time, every time he tried to role a smoke, the tobacco got carried away by the wind, and he seemed to have a rather tough time. Finally, the documents he had received at the border crossing got also blown away by the wind, and he set out to drive after them for dear life.

And as I was laughing at him, the wind blows the glove away that I had left lying on bike. And I obviously drove after it for dear life.
Crazy people, isn't it!

3

Finally I can separate myself from the Pampa that has been going on forever, and enter a mountainous area.

On the way it's starts raining. It's been a long time since I saw rain last.
4

The landscape looks beautiful even when it is raining.

Ohoh, darn! The water could get into the left pannier case.

But then again, it's not raining strongly, so it's probably gonna be OK.

And then arrive in Bariloche, situated at the foot of the Nahuel Huapi National Park.

I changed the itinerary, so that I would arrive earlier in Santiago.
Since I decided the other day on my flight from Santiago to Australia, the amount of time I can spend in Santiago is very limited. In addition, in order to have my bike repaired and maintained I would like to get it as early as possible to dealer in Santiago.
In order to do that, I created a schedule whereby rather then staying occasionally for a couple of nights in one place, I only spend one night in each place, skip some cities by doing more kilometres, and in this way arrive earlier than originally planned.
Physically it's gonna be a tough call, but I assume that this will work out somehow.

And in considering all that, I don't do any site seeing at all here in Bariloche, and instead I'll be relaxing.

I go into town and have a late lunch at a Chinese restaurant recommended in the guide book.
Then I fill the tank at the petrol station, buy myself dinner, proceed to the hotel I had planned to stay at and indeed there were rooms available. Without delay I go to my room, and settle down.

5

From the window I can see The Nahuel Huapi lake. It looks beautiful and creates a nice mood.

And since the room came with a bath tube, I take a nice hot bath, and then go early to sleep.

[Argentina] Perito Moreno to Esquel

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Distance: 553 kilometers
Departure:  8:30
Arrival:  17:30
Weather: Sunny, and cloudy later on.
Temperature: 13°C - 28°C

Today’s first destination is Rio Mayo.
It is a 123 kilometer ride.
40 kilometers of it is dirt road.

IMGP0519

It was a rough drive on the dirt and gravel road.

To tell you the truth, I fell over again today.
I can’t believe it!!
I couldn’t help but expressing my anger towards myself by screaming, barking, and growling to the sky!

「○×△※?>/」「@!!!!!!!====」

I couldn’t understand what I was screaming about either.
It wasn’t a serious fall and there was nobody around me.

I pulled my bike with all my might after I unloaded everything off of it.
It was hard to pull it up because my bike was heavy with a full tank of gas. On top of that, I have a special gas tank so it made it heavier.
This pulling motion made the pain on my left shoulder and back (which I hurt from my last fall) even worse.

I loaded everything back onto my bike and started driving again. When I had a good riding pace, my bike started shaking.

The rear tire started shaking.

Please don’t tell me…

I stopped the bike and checked the tire…. Flat…

Yes, I had a flat tire.

Oh no! Not again!!

I know that complaining wasn’t going to help this situation, so I started to change the tire.
IMGP0521

This is the third time I’ve had a flat tire on this journey. It happened continually, so each time my procedure was faster than before.

I really like this electric pump! Thank goodness!

I continued fixing the tire in the middle of the road.
IMGP0524

There was nobody around.

This route is actually the last dirt road that I needed to drive in South America.
In ten kilometers, I would enter the town, and then there would be paved road. I fell and got a flat tire right before that.
I felt like Mother Nature was telling me that I needed to appreciate the hardship in the nature of South America.  I felt like nature was giving me permission to have a fresh start.

I checked my tires in Rio Mayo. Everything looked good.
Yes, I can do this!
I tried to look for a gas station in the town, but I couldn’t find any.
I didn’t see any people either.
I was so happy that I could drive on paved road from here. Yay!

I arrived in the town Jose de San Martin, 360 kilometers away from Perito Moreno. When I was trying to find a gas station in the town, one of the local people told me that I couldn’t get gas until the next town.

I was able to get gas in Costa.

My bike was usually able to handle today’s distance without any gas stops. However, the fuel efficiency becomes worse when I drive against a headwind like I did today.
According to my calculations, I could still make it to Esquel without any gas stops. But this was only when I drove at eighty kilometers per hour. At that speed, it would definitely delay the time I would arrive.

I was able to drive at 120 kilometers per hours because I got gas here.
All I needed to do was pay attention to the wind.

As I started driving west/northwest, the headwind changed to a fair wind. The fuel efficiency became better as I drove with the wind at my back.
It was interesting.

It was a long day, especially because of my fall and flat tire.
I finally arrived in Esquel.

There was an old car parked next to the hotel.
It was a classic.

It was a town full of nature and surrounded by mountains.

I think that it had a population of 30,000.

I was exhausted when I arrived at the hotel. I found out that the owners of the hotel (a married couple) were BMW bike riders. The nice conversation I had with them eased my exhaustion.

[Argentina] Gabernador Gregores to Perito Moreno

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Distance: 344 kilometers
Departure:  8:30
Arrival:  16:00
Weather: Sunny
Temperature: 28°C

My whole body was sore when I woke up this morning.
My left shoulder was especially worse.
I took extra time to stretch my body. I played Jon Bon Jovi to stimulate myself.
After eating breakfast that I bought yesterday, I got ready to leave.

Today’s destination is Perito Moreno.
I was originally going to spend a night at Bajo Calacokes. However, I found out from Mr. Saburo that I was able to go pass the town and go to Perito Moreno in one day.
I wanted to go to Santiago, the capital city, and go to the BMW dealer shop and Touratech as soon as possible.
Just like my body, my bike was covered with cuts and bruises. I wanted to fix as much of it as I can, and also challenge the last continent, Australia.

Today’s route was a lot better than yesterday’s. I was going from Calafate to Gregores, and it was a bit difficult. The paved road was partially open, and it helped me.

Making dust, I arrived in Bajo Calacokes. I decided to take a lunch break.
It was a small town with a gas station and a hotel, just like Mr. Saburo and Mr. Ido said.

I decided to get gas here, just in case something happened in Perito Moreno. I entered the gas station store.

“No gasoline,” the man said.

This meant that I couldn’t get any gas between Gregores and Perito Moreno. The ride would be around 350 kilometers long.
It was going to delay the trip if I didn’t have any extra gas while in Argentina.
IMGP0514

I saw some dust far from me. There was nobody there.

There was a strong wind.
I didn’t like the sudden strong wind while I was driving, especially on the dirt.
It almost made me fall over.

It looked like the storm of Patagonia would continue.

I arrived in Perito Moreno safely.
This is another small town with a population of 5,000.

I asked for gas station and hotel information at the information desk at the center of the town.

Unfortunately, I was told that there weren’t any vacancies.

“You’ll need to sleep in a tent,” the woman said.

“I don’t have a tent.” I told her.

“I’m just kidding,” she replied.

She was just joking around with me.
She was a fun person.
She offered me a dormitory with a kitchen.
I had internet access there.

I wondered about what I should do tomorrow.
Should I follow my original plan and go to Rio Mayo? By the dirt road, it’s 150 kilometers away.
Should I go to Esquel by passing Rio Mayo? It would take ten hours to get to Esquel.
My body was tired and hurting so badly. Plus, tomorrow’s ride would be on a dirt road.

I kept asking myself,

“I need to go anyway, right?” a part of me asked.

そう、GO!だ。
Yes! The answer was “GO!”

The only concern was gasoline…

[Argentina] From El Calafate to Gobernador Gregores

25th January 2012 (Wednesday)

Distance:351km
Departure:9:30
Arrival:20:30
Whether:Blue skies
Temperature:26℃

The day didn't start well from the beginning in the morning: Even tough I received a warm good by from Saburo-san and Ido-san, I had to turn back because I'd forgotten something.

But I'm completely happy about the fact that I was able to meet these two bikers together here in South America,

And as soon as I've entered Ruta Cuarenta (Route 40), the road turns into dirt.
DSC08560

And this bad road goes on and on for a long time.

There are rather rough pebble patches, as well as some with ravel and a fair lot of sand.

And then something started to be wrong with the bike.

It already had started yesterday coming back from the glacier: it become increasingly difficult to steer.
In fact, when moving the steer, if felt as if it got stuck somewhere close to the centre pole.
The one I had changed in Salta lasted for 10'000 kilometres. This time it's a wee bit early, really.

And the hind tyre I have on is of course on road tyres.
The front tyre is an off road tyre, but in fact the profile has become rather shallow.
Thinking of the state the bike is in, I can't really go any faster.

And as I was driving while thinking about all this ...

What??!!!!

I fall.

And to make matters worse: I fall high side. (*)

(*) High side: Not just 'falling' as slipping and falling to the ground. But instead it is a phenomenon whereby the bike slips first away (without falling), and in order to avoid a fall, the biker reacts accordingly. However, as a consequence of the rider's reaction, and the throttle of the bike, both bike and rider are thrown (sometimes repeatedly) through the air and then hit the ground sidewise.

I can see the stars dance!

And I'm thrown around in the dust. How many times did I roll over?

Zaaa!

I'm not sure whether the bike slipped together with me, or even if we're rolling over together, but I know that it is moving my way from the sound that is approaching.

Before my inner eye raise scenes from when I was racing, when the bike fell onto the rider after they'd fallen over high side.

I just pray that it won't fall on me.

And it stops just a few dozen of centimetres away from my body.
DSC08561

And my body stopped too.

I hit the ground with my shoulder and a part of my head.
I feel a sharp pain, and can't move.
And I can't breath.

There's sand in my mouth, and I can taste blood.
I've cut the the inside of my mouth.

I waited for what I think was maybe a minute.
I get up from the ground and check for injuries.
The collar bone, for which I had feared most, is not broken.
My body hurts all over, but nothing is broken!

Wow, this really was lucky!
This is all thanks to the riding gear I'm wearing. I'm really grateful for that.

However, the bike is a problem …

This is my first time to fall over high side on a public road.
And even in a races, the one thing I certainly wanted to avoid is falling high side.
Not only are the injuries pretty awful, but also the bike ends up in miserable conditions.

Timidly I look at my bike.
Fragments of the screen and the body lie scattered all over the place.
The mirror lies far way on the opposite side of the road.
And because the tank was nearly full, it is leaking petrol.
I need to try and have it stand upright as soon as possible.

But the bike came to a stand still facing down the hill, so even after taking off all the lugging, I don't manage to put it back on its wheels. .
DSC08562

But, my continuous good look didn't fail me even this time around.
A car driving by stopped by, and the 3 male passengers gave me a hand.
They were particularly concerned about whether I had sustained any injuries, but after I said “Vale, Vale, Muchas gracis!!”, we parted ways.

Then I check the state of the now standing bike.
IMGP0502

There are small tears in one section of the cowl, and the screen is damaged.

IMGP0503

IMGP0504

The left pannier case got loose, and the latch of its cover was blown off.

IMGP0505

The right pannier case looks fairly bent.

The problem is, whether I will be able to start the engine at all.

In a mood for prayers I turn the ignition key.

Broom, Brooooooom!

“You are … just really amazing”

That's how I praise this much loved vehicle of mine.
And then I apologise for my inappropriate behaviour.

No one else other than me is that inexperienced not to adjust the driving style to the bike's and the road's condition.
At the same time, I do understand the bike in all its aspect.

Other than that, the bike is surprisingly OK.
Mirror, steer, lever, pedal etc. not one of them is broken.
One of the fittings got displaced, but it was only a matter of reverting it by hand to its original place.
Then I sat on the bike and checked the wheels, the frame, the front work, and found not a single problem.
Hmmm, it seems this bike is really ok.

This bike seems to resemble my own character: it never gives up until reaching the goal.
Nice partner!

On the road side I set myself to repairing the pannier cases.
I hit it with the soft hammer from my tool case here and there.
In this desolated place where only animals walk around once in a while, I can make all the noises in the world without bothering anyone.
All the cars that pass – which are only a few – stop, and ask 'everything ok?`
Moved by everyone's concerned I hammer away.
Once I have returned it to its former shape as good as I could, I reattach it to the bike.

Then all the luggage goes back on, and I retake the road towards the next city.
In any case, with these tyres the whole issue is pretty ugly.
Because head of me, the dirt road still goes on.
Hmm, and if I were to change it against the flat off road /multi-use tyre that I'm carrying?

And just as the sun starts to set, I arrive at Gobernador Gregores.
And immediately proceed to the petrol station
And sure enough, the first place says 'no petrol'
I fill the tank at the second place, a YPF petrol station.
And I have them show me a hotel and a tyre repair place.

In the tyre repair place, they glue a patch to the back of the tyre, and even change the tyre for me. All for 5 Pesos.
What – 90 yen??
I'm positively surprised.
There's nothing happier than receiving a favour when in a bad situation.

Then, while I'm repairing the wheel, I notice it.
I can't lift my left arm any more.
It seems the damage from the accident finally showed up.

The hotel I was shown earlier had no vacancies, and without finding immediately an alternative, I had to check out a few more. Finally, when I check into a hostel it is already 20.30pm.
There is no restaurant, so I have to go and shop for groceries.
After coming back to the accommodation, eating bread and fruit for dinner, taking a shower and starting to write the blog it's already midnight.
They said that there was WiFi, but I can't get it to work.
I'll upload this blog in the next place, Perito Moreno.

I'm exhausted.
And my body hurts.

転倒=====!!!!

I arrived at the border where nobody is there.
It was wrong that I followed the GPS navigation.
I had to drive on the dirt for an hour again.
Although it was a place in the place drive a little less than 20km toward the west from PuertoNatales, many people go to the place which goes into the Argentina side toward north from town, and that one was better.

It escaped from dirt to the pavement way.
It's the route 40 and comfortable road.
There is the sing which says Calafate is left and the rout 40 is left road. I noticed that there is dirt when I went little too far but I decided to go through Esperanca even it's long-cut.

The only restaurant in Esperanca was full because tourist bus drops in, so I have lunch at a cafe in the gas station on the other side.

[Argentina] Staying in Puerto Natales (Round trip to Paine National Park)

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

Distance: 350 km
Starting time: 10:30
Arrival time: 14:00
Weather: Cloudy and partly sunny
Temperature: 16℃

I stay in Puerto Natales and go to Paine National Park!
My first place to visit is Cueva del Milodon where is 15km from the town.

1

Well, what is Milodon?
It is a kind of the monster of bipedal locomotion in the length of 3 m.
It seems that the fossil is found in this cave and research still continues although it is already exterminated of 10,000 years ago.

2

It is supposed that Milodon and human beings of ancient times lived in the cave made as a result of a glacier's continuing deleting the belly of a rocky mountain.

Milodon is such a huge.
3

The imagination model in which the unearthed bone and Mildolon of those days lived is in the mini museum at the entrance of the cave.

4

I like that there is romanticism here.

I go to Paine National Park!

5

I could see breathtaking views continuously!!
I aim to the lake Grey where is about 180 km from Puelt Natales.
The purpose that I go there is for taking the tourist ship which comes out from the pier of the hotel on the lakeside, and inspecting a glacier.

Although I thought I will have enough time to arrive, I found that I don't have enough time from the navigation.

Although more than half of today's distance is dirt, I will not feel pain because I can see that there are birds at watering places which inhabit continuation of an unparalleled view, the guanaco of the wildness which appears occasionally.

Shortly after I apply traction on an uphill, a foil spin will be started, but I raise a pace.

The sailing time is at 14:00 and I arrived there at 13:30
I didn't have time to have a lunch but it was good.

7

Since I came out of the town to 9:30, it took 4 hours and a half.

I realized that my motorbike is something wrong right before arriving.
Although it is a dirt road, the unstable feeling of the circumference of rear tire is very bad.
When I arrived the destination and checked my motorbike,

wow... The rear tire blows out!
This is second time for my journey.

OMG! Here?!

Resultingly I gave up to go on board and start to repair the flat tire.
6

I am regretful although long-distance dirt has been drive over many hours so far.
Since I am mortifying, I will begin work without seeing the departure of a ship.

It's not like a tire steps on something and made a hole and it seems that the rent has been made into the tire in the traction in a dirt way.
6−1

Hmm.... it was not so hard throttle work I think...
It's frail even as Michelin.

The lake Grey after the ship left.
8

I can see the glacier the left side of far and the huge drift ice lower right side.

It is a person that looks small on the alley passing through the middle of a lake.

I met 2 BMW here.

9

Both of them are husband and wife's tandems (two-seater).

I talked with them and two hasband and wife are from USA, and the trip was begun from Buenos Aires and they said that they go to Ushaia.
It seems that their motorbikes are sent to Buenos Aires and started from there.

I tried to repair the flat tire but the rent is big.

I could make it once, though the air comes out little when I came back from my lunch.
But the air is just little, so I don't make another try then go back to the town.

The lake and Paine Mountains.
10

The river.
11

12

Waterfowls and guanacos live together on good terms.

13

Scenery is really great!
Since the tripod broke down from the strong wind, I gave up taking a picture of the two-shot of me and my motorbike.

14

Thanks to the strength of this wind, I might be able to run without being exposed to dust depending on a wind.

15

I put air into a tire with an electric pump at the roadside repeatedly today.

It was tough touring but I could see great scenery!

It was very productive day today too.

[Chile] – Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales

January 21st, 2012 (Saturday)

Distance:250キロ
Departure:10:30am
Arrival:14:00pm
Weather:Cloudy
Temperature:11℃

時間が遅いせいかAbierto(開店)が少ない。

Yesterday night when I arrived at the accommodation, it was already late, and so I went immediately for dinner after
leaving the luggage in my room.
But as I arrive at the sushi bar which according to the guide book as a good reputation, it is already closed.
It's probably really late, so there aren't many places that are still Abierta (open).
With a strong, cold wind blowing, I walk around town looking for somewhere to eat. And by chance, the restaurant I finally enter does have sushi!
Since this is a port city, it has got the full range of sea food dishes, and sushi is probably just one more of those.
The sushi I'm served are salmon, scallops, crab claws. The neta was OK, but the rice was awful.
Actually it's a waste, but I didn't touch the rice and left it behind.
Real Japanese is indeed a rather complicated issue.

Today I'm off to a small city with a somewhat similar name as this one.
1

The 'Magellan' which I pass close by as I leave the city.

The road from Punta Arenas.
2

The road leads along the Strait of Magellan, which means it's icy cold!
2-1

A little bit further on, and I'll be getting into a real Fjord.

This wasn't really big, or was it ;)

That's a characteristic of
the Americas – the transport of entirely finished structures.
I do understand of course, that it is cheaper that build it on site where it is needed, but there is also a risk factor involved ...

This Southern region of Chile produced wool for the whole world, and hence there are a lot of grazing sheep around.
4

As the wind is too strong, there aren't many sheep standing, but rather their crawling around :D
They are grazing while moving forward in a crawling manner.

There are a lot of totally white Guanacos around here!
5

Arrival in Puerto Natales.
6

I can see the Torres del Paine National Park in the distance, some 100 kilometres ahead.
The Torres del Paine is a place where at over 3000 m over sea level there is snow year round, and there are numerous glacier lakes.

The city is with 20'000 inhabitants rather small, yet there are a lot of tourists walking around in the street where the shops are lined up one next to the other.
And since this is the base to go into the Torres del Paine, I get to see a lot of backpackers, trekkers, and hikers.
Apparently this is a famous place among people who like mountain climbing and hiking.

As far as I'm concerned, I content myself in the Paines tomorrow
with my bike.

Hmm, will I be able to get to one of the glacier lakes at all?

Rio Grande (Argentina) to Punta Arenas (Chile)

English http://justgiving.jp/pdf/justgiving-man.pdf?110318

Rio Grande (Argentina) to Punta Arenas (Chile)

Friday, January 20th, 2012
Departure:  8:30
Arrival:  22:00
Weather: Sunny
Temperature: 13°C

This morning, I realized that I couldn’t use Wi-Fi in the hotel.
This happens all the time in South America.

I headed to Sebastian, the town at the border.
I left Argentina and entered Chile safely.

Yay! Congrats to me for entering Chile.
Chile is the 62nd country!

I found a cup of instant ramen noodles in the cafeteria/shop next to the border office in Chile!
I couldn’t help but to buy it. I ended up eating standing up.
It had been a long time since I had had this. It was sooo good!!

As I entered Chile, I found a long dirt road in a vast plain field.
1

I needed to pay attention because the edge of the road was easily broken.

I arrived at the shoreline of Magellan!
2

I saw many sea gulls.
2−1

I wonder if there’s such thing as a sea gull meat….
I kind of want to try it.

There were animals climbing up the cliff.
3

4

They were Guanaco. They live in places where there are strong winds.

I arrived in Porvenir in Tierra del Fuego. Tierra del Fuego is an island near the southern tip of South America. It’s the only town in this area of Chile.
I was going to take a ferry to get to today’s destination, Punta Arenas.
I went to the dock…
There was nobody there. There wasn’t a ferry either…

I heard seagulls over my head.

When I listened carefully, they sounded like they were saying “I’m stupid!?”

Did I miss the ferry?

Be quiet, seagulls!

There was a person on the fishing boat deck, so I asked him. He said that the ferry leaves 7:00 pm.
I read my guide book carefully. It stated that there were two departure times: at two o’clock and seven o’clock pm.
I just missed the ferry at two.

I wondered about what I wanted to do until seven.
The guide book said that this was the town of nothing.
I decided to eat first.
5

I finally found a restaurant. As I entered the inside of it, I noticed that the pricing of the menu was strange.
It seemed odd when I tried to calculate it into yen.

Oh! That’s right! I’m in Chile now.
The currency mark is still the same, but they use Chile peso.
I realized that I didn’t exchange my money at the border, so I didn’t have any Chile peso!
I had already ordered the food and there was already a piece of bread in my mouth… I hurried and asked a senorita.

“You can’t use any cards, but you can use US dollars.”

She said with a smile.
I was relieved.

I found a small store that offered an exchange service after my meal. I was able to exchange some money there.

I went back to the dock an hour early and bought a ticket for the ferry.
It was going to be a two and a half hour ride.

The ocean was rougher than I expected.
My bike, which was tied to the deck, was all wet because of the waves.

6

It was 9:30 pm.

7

And then the sun set.

7−1

Arriving in Punta Arenas!

After I got gas for my bike, I went to the center of the town.
8

It was a quiet and neat town.
This town is on the most southern part of Chile. It had a population of 110,000.

There was a statue of the Ferdinand Magellan Memorial in Plaza de Armas.
9

Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to sail the Atlantic Ocean and into the Pacific Ocean.
Because of his great achievement, much of world history was changed.

The amazing part of the story of Magellan is that his crew completed the entire voyage, although Magellan himself was killed during the battle in the Philippines.
I can tell that his will was strong enough for his crew to complete the voyage without him.

There is a legend that your sail will be safe if you touch the sitting shining statue of Alcalf’s foot.
10

I touched it firmly.

The rest of my journey will be safe.
