さて、今日はいよいよ、北米大陸最後の日です。
Today is my last day in Central America.
朝起きると、外は青空が見える。
When I woke up in the morning, I could see the blue sky outside.
やった!
Yesss!
と喜んだのも束の間、どんどん雲が厚くなる。
But …. as I was celebrating the good weather, thick clouds started to cover the sky.
パナマの道は、たまには穴もありますが、基本、走り易いです。
Panama's streets do have some potholes too, but overall it's easy enough to drive on them
パンアメリカンハイウェイが熱帯雨林を切り拓くように伸びています。
The Pan American Highway is designed such that it circumvents the rainforest .
二車線の区間もあり、順調に飛ばしていると白バイの警察官が私を呼び止めようとしています。
それが二回ほどありましたが、無視します。(笑)
だって、本気で制止しようとしてなく、とりあえず停めてみようかな、っという感じだったので。
There are even sections with 2 lanes. Although … when I was driving a little bit fast where the conditions where good, I was requested stopped by a policeman on a white bike.
This happened even twice. But I just ignored them both (:D)
Well, both gave me the impression that they were not seriously trying to stop me but rather thought they'd give it a try and see if I would stop.
三度目は、ダメでした。
強い意気込みで私の前に立ちはだかっています。
The third time around this did, however, not work.
The policeman stepped decidedly into my way.
止まって、話しをするとスピードガンを見せて、１００キロの制限速度のところを１１１キロ出していた、という。
When I stopped and started to talk to him, I was told that I was driving at 111km/h when in fact on that stretch 100km/h was the limit.
「違反チケットを切るからね。罰金だよ」と。
“I'll have to give you a ticket, you know. And a fine of course.”
しかし、２０分くらいやりとりの末、おとがめなく開放です。
スペイン語が出来ないので、会話がかみ合わず、アホのふりしていたら終了でした。
別れ際に、「ジュースくらいくれよ」
とやはり賄賂目的だったようですが、飲みかけのペットボトルを見せると要らないと言われました。
However, after discussing back and forth for some 20 minutes, he eventually waves the ticket and the fine.
Since I can't talk Spanish, and hence couldn't argue with him, I just pretended not to understand anything at all, which in the end solved the issue.
When parting ways the policeman still said “You could at least give me some fruit juice!”. Aha, it indeed was a try to receive some bribe! When I show him the half empty pet bottle though, he rejects the offer .. :D
本日の行程の半分くらいまで来た所で昼どきになる。
昼食をとろうと寄った町の入り口にマクドナルドがドカンと聳えている。
アメリカ大陸に入ってからマックの存在感は圧倒的です！
When I reach about half of today's target distance, it it lunch time.
As I enter the small city nearby to eat lunch, the first thing that meets my eyes are a McDonald and a Tuckan.
Every since I entered the American continent, McDonald's presence in overwhelming.
さすがに今日はマックは避けたいと思うが、土曜で他の店が開いていない。
ということで入店し、ビッグマックセットを注文。
ちなみに、日本だと「セット」だが、中米だと「コンボ」と言う。カナダ／USAだと「ミール」だった。
I actually wanted to avoid MacDonalds today, but as it happens it's Saturday and all the other restaurants are closed.
So I enter the place, and order a BigMac set.
By the way, in Japan it's a 'Set', but in Central America they call it a 'Combo' and in Canada and the US it's a 'Meal'.
さて出発！思った時に、雨が降り出した。
暫く様子を見るも雨脚は強くなるばかり。
And just when I thought, 'Let's go on', it started raining.
Waiting a little bit to see how it goes, the 'passing shower' becomes stronger.
３０分待っても止む気配がないので出発する事にした。
店内で、レインウェアの上下を着て完全武装していると家族連れなどでほぼ満員の店内の注目の的になってコッパズカしい。
I waited for some 30 minutes, but as there was no indication that the rain would stop any time soon, I decided to continue today's journey.
I put on my full rain gear, and by the time I was done I had become the centre of attention of a MacDonalds full of families. Embarrassing!
強めの雨の中を走り出すとすぐにブーツの中は水浸しになってきた。
ブーツも大分、痛んできて、防水力も薄れてきた。
今晩も濡れたライディングギア達をドライヤーで乾かすことに時間がとられそうだ。
Soon after starting to drive in this down pour, my boots had gone all wet on the inside.
Not only do the boots hurt, no, they are not even waterproof any more.
I guess, tonight I'll be able to make some time to dry the wet riding gear in the dryer.
目的地まで４０キロくらいの分岐で道を間違える。
普段ならすぐにUターンが出来るはずが、その付近に限って新しい高速道路になっていて中央分離帯の隙間がない。
And then I took the wrong way at a way fork when there where about 40 kilometres left to reach today's target.
Normally it's easy enough to just make a U-turn, but right there the road had been turned into a motorway and there was no gap in the middle to change over into the oncoming lane.
１０キロ近く走ってやっと工事車両用の隙間を発見。
後続車、対向車に注意を払いながら、反対車線に出て行きたい方向へ戻ることが出来た。
Only after 10 kilometres I finally spot a pass-through for construction work cars.
Carefully watching the cars coming behind me as well as those on the oncoming lane, I manage to change directions successfully and return to the way fork.
パナマの標識は、中米諸国の中でも小さいので要注意だ。
Sign postings in Panama are small even in comparison to the rest of Central America, so special attention is in place.
突然、何の前触れもなく、眼前に大きな橋が現れた！
Suddenly, and without previous warning, a huge bridge extends before my eyes!
おおおっっ！！これは、ラス・アメリカス橋だっ！
ついに、パナマ運河まで来たんだ！
Oops, this was the 'Las Americas' bridge … and here I am, already at the Panama Canal.
北米の終わりだ！
North & Central America is finished.
南米の始まりだ！
This is the start to South America.
停車して撮影したいが出来ない道になっているのが超ー残念！
走りながらなのでこれが精一杯。
I actually wanted to stop and take a picture, but it wasn't allowed to stop at that point of the road, which really sucks.
This is the best I could do while driving ...
私の目に入って来た景色は、カリブ海側から、太平洋へと広がるパナマ湾です！
What I see from here is the Bay of Panama that extends from Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
ここは、特別な色の空をしていました。
In this place, I have the impression that the sky has got a special colour ...
橋の上でガッツポーズ！！
And on the bridge, I assume a triumph pose!
いやったぜーーーーー！！！！！！！
Made it!

さらに意味不明の驚嘆の声を発し、カメラのシャッターを押しながら橋を通過していると荷台に一杯、若者が乗ったトラックが私を見て笑っていた。
Finally, I hear a voice that says something I didn't understand. I was pressing the camera shutter while driving, and the bridge was full of trucks … a young lad in one of trucks saw me and laughed.
その後、無事パナマシティ内の宿に到着しました。
街の報告は明日以降にしたいと思います。
After that, I arrived without incidents at my hotel in Panama City.
I'll tell you more about the city tomorrow, I think.

今回、3大陸目を完走して気付いたことがある。
満足感や達成感が前のふたつに比べて少々希薄だ。
From now on, I'll be crossing my 3rd continent, and there are a few things I want to remind myself of.
First, when I compare it to the beginning, there are fewer times when I really feel satisfied with what I have achieved.
かかった期間、訪問国数が少ないのもあるが、一言で言えば、あまり苦労がなかったからだ。
うーん、やっぱりマゾなのか。(笑)
The time passed in each of the countries is limited, however, as far as I can say, so far nothing grave or difficult has really happened.
Hmmm, is this really the case??? :D
なんてことを言っていると南米で大変なことになりそうなので、無事にここまで辿り着けたことに神様、家族、多くの仲間、皆様に深く感謝します。
Saying this at this point of time, South America is going to be tough … so, I would like to thank the Gods, my family and my many friends and acquaintances, all of you, for your support.
北(中)米大陸を縦断してきた感想を一言でいえば「USAとその周辺諸国」という感がしました。
各国がより近代化、標準化してきたとも言えるが、多くの国が良きに着け悪しきにつけUSA主導にかなりの影響を受けていることを感じた。
If I had to summarise my experiences in North and Central America in a single impression, I would say it is “the US and it's neighbouring countries”.
Of courser I could also mentioned modernisations and improvements for each of the countries, however, I feel that the US – for better or for worse – has an overwhelming influence on all of them.
各国境を越えて行くときも文化などに大きな差異を感じることが少なくかなり安心感を持って移動することが出来たこともその要因。
平和と豊かさ、全ての国民の幸福感の向上につながっていっていることを祈りたい。
This may be the primary factor why, despite that there were substantial cultural differences between the countries as I crossed the borders, I at least always felt safe on my way.
I would like to pray for all citizen of these countries to be able and live in peace, prosperity and happiness.
何はともあれ、ここまで無事に到着出来たことを祝おう、ということで食事！

And to celebrate my safe arrival at this key point of my journey, let's have a meal!
In front of my hotel, there is a Japanese restaurant.
カツ丼で一人打ち上げです！
This is a single serving!
この店「松栄」は地球の歩き方に記載されているとおり結構美味しかった☆The restaurant is called 'Shouei' , and just as it it written in the guide “How to travel the world”, it was quite tasty.
そういえば、昨日の国境でもそうだったが、アフリカの途中からよく言われるようになったことがある。
Which reminds me. This happened yesterday at the border, but actually is something I'm regularly asked since roughly Central Africa.

Personally, I don't think I have changed at all however.
Did crossing of three continents change me in some way?
思うことは、自分が成長するためには、自ら意識する必要がある。
そう、主体性を持つこと。
旅に出ただけで成長や変化が出来るなら、世界中、旅人だらけになってしまっているだろう。(笑)
I thing this is maybe necessary, in order to grow ...
And to become more independent.
That one grows and changes just by leaving and going on a journey is probably the reason why the globe is full of people travelling :D
