December 21st, 2011 (Wednesday)
Distance:230キロ
Departure time:10:15am
Arrival time:14:30pm
Weather:Blue skies with occasional showers
Temperature:7℃

No matter what, I'm really pleased that the bike is back in good health!!
Even if I drive free handed in doesn't waver. That's the way I like it!

And then, the 'Engine Stop' phenomenon that start in Chivay is apparently caused be the high altitude. The BWM dealer said that this happens even with 4 cylinder machines.

All in order, so off I go!
… or that's what I thought. The traffic in La Paz is really pretty bad.
1

Construction works, the driving manners and skills, traffic order … what ever it is, it is in the process of developing.
To leave the down centre behind me, it took me nearly an hour.

A straight road, and I'm headed towards Uyuni!!
2

At an altitude of close to 4000 meters over sea level, the Altiplano (tableland) is going on and on and on.
It starts raining and gets cold quite suddenly. In addition, the road is monotonous, and I start to get tired.

Arrival in Oruro.
As a result of the rain there are small floodings all over the place.
Will Uyuni be OK???

(HOTEL PLAZA)
Well, for now, I proceed to the town centre, and step into a 3 star hotel.
There are rooms available, there is WiFi, breakfast is included. For a total of 210 Bolivianos (2300 yen).
And as I check it, for some reason, it was the suite!
Might have been that no one was using it. (HOTEL PLAZA)

After a late lunch / early dinner, I go down town.

I even get to think that it's not the worst place in Bolivia so far, with respect to people begging in the streets.
But then within a few dozen meters, children, elderly and handicapped people holding out their hands to beg for alms appeared one after the other.

Right, up until here.
Every time I see abroad something like this, and which is considered completely normal, I really get to think that Japan is a miracle.

Oruro is surrounded by mines, and has a population of 220'000 inhabitants. The city doesn't really have much to see, and even the cathedral just next to the 10th-of-February square is simple.

I get something to eat at a restaurant a few steps away from the square.
On the way, and because it was a bit of an odd time, a lot of places where already closed.
I order a hamburger – it's been a while since I had one.
Together with fresh papaya juice, it costs me 25 Bolivianos (280 Yen).

Since I want to head of really early tomorrow morning, I won't be eating the hotel breakfast. I hence go to shop for bred for breakfast before returning to the hotel.

Tomorrow I'm going to the salt lake of Uyuni. I was looking forward to coming here even before leaving from Japan. It is a highlight among highlights in South America.

There's a probability that I will stay overnight where there is no internet available, so there is a good chance that I would be able to upload anything for a few days.

And in this context, a bit early, but: Merry Christmas everyone!

I pray that everyone will be able to have a good time, and a smile on their face.
