[Argentina] Tucumán to La Rioja

Friday, December 30th, 2011
Distance: 310 kilometers
Departure: 09:30
Arrival: 15:00
Weather: Cloudy, but then rainy and sunny later on
Temperature: Over 36°C?

I left Tucumán this morning.  It was raining very hard.

1

I thought that there was an advertising car outside when I heard a loud noise. It was a horse-drawn carriage with a big speaker.
A horse is a must in this town.

It became even hotter when I opened the shield of my helmet!
This happens when the temperature goes higher than a human’s body heat. It happened when I was driving in China, too.

2

It felt so good underneath the blue summer sky!!

When I went to a gas station, I was told that they didn’t have any gas.
I went to the gas station in the next town. There was a long waiting line of bikes, cars, and trucks.

I kept going until I saw another gas station, but this one had a long line, too. I went to the station where there was no line, but then I was told that they didn’t have any gas either.
I decided to go back to the one that had the long line.
I was scared that they wouldn’t have enough gas for me.

3

I was able to get gas there. I felt so relieved.

It is bike heaven in Argentina.
I see many riders in South America, but the difference is that there are many local women riders in Argentina.

They stopped next to me when I was at a red traffic light.

4

The engine of the bike was exposed. It had no fairings.
The bike looked like it would go fast, but it also looked like it would be short-lived.

I arrived in La Rioja!
I went for a walk after I unloaded my stuff at the hotel.

5

Siesta (long lunch) was thoroughgoing here.
It looked like a ghost town.

6

7

8

9

It really did look like a ghost town…

10

Dogs here were also taking part in the siesta.

This store was open.

11

I actually went in this shop yesterday. It was an ice cream shop, and they had delicious, reasonably-priced ice cream in good portions. ^^

12

There was a cathedral in an open area.

They had main altar painted with beautiful frescos.

13

There was nobody in there.
I think that this was my first time that I had gone into an empty church.

I went for dinner at eight o’clock pm after I went back to the hotel.
This time, there were many people and cars in the town!

14

I remembered a story about how some country towns had throughout siestas in Spain. Mica-san (whom I met in Madrid, Spain) told me about it. He did many things for me while I was there.

I was surprised that there was a town in Argentina that has throughout siestas.

I collected some information about Dakar Rally when I returned to my hotel.
I managed to find out that the location of the race was close to my hotel.

I’m so excited!
Now I know how the people who go see the “Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Road Race” from long distances feel. (Haha)
