[Argentina] Perito Moreno to Esquel

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Distance: 553 kilometers
Departure:  8:30
Arrival:  17:30
Weather: Sunny, and cloudy later on.
Temperature: 13°C - 28°C

Today’s first destination is Rio Mayo.
It is a 123 kilometer ride.
40 kilometers of it is dirt road.

IMGP0519

It was a rough drive on the dirt and gravel road.

To tell you the truth, I fell over again today.
I can’t believe it!!
I couldn’t help but expressing my anger towards myself by screaming, barking, and growling to the sky!

「○×△※?>/」「@!!!!!!!====」

I couldn’t understand what I was screaming about either.
It wasn’t a serious fall and there was nobody around me.

I pulled my bike with all my might after I unloaded everything off of it.
It was hard to pull it up because my bike was heavy with a full tank of gas. On top of that, I have a special gas tank so it made it heavier.
This pulling motion made the pain on my left shoulder and back (which I hurt from my last fall) even worse.

I loaded everything back onto my bike and started driving again. When I had a good riding pace, my bike started shaking.

The rear tire started shaking.

Please don’t tell me…

I stopped the bike and checked the tire…. Flat…

Yes, I had a flat tire.

Oh no! Not again!!

I know that complaining wasn’t going to help this situation, so I started to change the tire.
IMGP0521

This is the third time I’ve had a flat tire on this journey. It happened continually, so each time my procedure was faster than before.

I really like this electric pump! Thank goodness!

I continued fixing the tire in the middle of the road.
IMGP0524

There was nobody around.

This route is actually the last dirt road that I needed to drive in South America.
In ten kilometers, I would enter the town, and then there would be paved road. I fell and got a flat tire right before that.
I felt like Mother Nature was telling me that I needed to appreciate the hardship in the nature of South America.  I felt like nature was giving me permission to have a fresh start.

I checked my tires in Rio Mayo. Everything looked good.
Yes, I can do this!
I tried to look for a gas station in the town, but I couldn’t find any.
I didn’t see any people either.
I was so happy that I could drive on paved road from here. Yay!

I arrived in the town Jose de San Martin, 360 kilometers away from Perito Moreno. When I was trying to find a gas station in the town, one of the local people told me that I couldn’t get gas until the next town.

I was able to get gas in Costa.

My bike was usually able to handle today’s distance without any gas stops. However, the fuel efficiency becomes worse when I drive against a headwind like I did today.
According to my calculations, I could still make it to Esquel without any gas stops. But this was only when I drove at eighty kilometers per hour. At that speed, it would definitely delay the time I would arrive.

I was able to drive at 120 kilometers per hours because I got gas here.
All I needed to do was pay attention to the wind.

As I started driving west/northwest, the headwind changed to a fair wind. The fuel efficiency became better as I drove with the wind at my back.
It was interesting.

It was a long day, especially because of my fall and flat tire.
I finally arrived in Esquel.

There was an old car parked next to the hotel.
It was a classic.

It was a town full of nature and surrounded by mountains.

I think that it had a population of 30,000.

I was exhausted when I arrived at the hotel. I found out that the owners of the hotel (a married couple) were BMW bike riders. The nice conversation I had with them eased my exhaustion.
