(Australia) Sydney Visit #7

Friday, February 17th, 2012

This morning I received a phone call from James. It made me happy.

“The customs official is coming to confirm the bike. I’m going to wait for him with the wooden box open for him. If he approves it, you can have your bike!” James said.

Yay!
If I can get my bike, I’ll be able to take my bike to DMV and validate my vehicle insurance today.

If everything goes smoothly, I’ll be able to depart from Sydney by Saturday morning!!

I was so excited and went to the warehouse near the airport. Unfortunately, my situation went from good to bad…
1

The customs official found something.

He found a bit of mud on the rear fender of my bike. It was required to be washed off. Otherwise, they weren’t going to give me permission to take my bike.

I might not be able to pick up my bike until next week.

Mr. Toru insisted and continued negotiation with James. James also spoke with the official many times. We were able to go to the car wash with them.
After my bike got washed, I was able to get my bike if the official allowed me!

Meanwhile, I went to the Milk Bar, an old fashioned restaurant across from the warehouse. I ordered a hamburger to go.
Oh my! Is this even a food?

2

The size was between a softball and volley ball.
It couldn’t beat any other burger, including the Sasebo Burger. It made a Big Mac look like a Mini Mac.

It was yummy.
I was told that this classically styled meal has been becoming less and less popular as the time goes.

When we followed the truck, it took us to a harbor facility area.
There were many crates that had been unloaded from ships. The hugest forklift that I’ve ever seen was lifting and stacking the crates as if they were toy blocks.

2−1

I got it! This was the place where they conducted inspection, extermination, and wash.

I thought that it was going to be just a formality, but they washed my bike thoroughly. My bike was soaking wet.
3

I received bad news.

“The official who confirms the wash went home for the day. Come back on Monday.” the cleaning staff said.

What?!?

We hurriedly explained the situation to him. The forklift operator said, “I’ll go find him for you.” He jumped on the forklift elegantly, just like he was jumping on a bike, and drove away to the officials’ office.

After a few minutes, he came back, still on the forklift.

“I found him. It’ll be okay.”

Huh. Our feelings have swung back and forth between joy and despair all day today.

I was able to safely take my bike after the wash and confirmation by the official.
Yay! Yay! YAY!

I connected the battery terminals that were unconnected earlier and put air in the flat rear tire.

At the same time, I received the information from the DMV.

“You cannot get your vehicle insurance validated today. It is getting late.”

Are you serious?!?

One problem after another…
4

It was a catch 22.

Toru
Mr. Toru made numerous phone calls for me.
We sat on the ground at an old empty building’s entrance near the harbor. It was raining outside.

We decided to leave it as it was for the time being, and went back to Mr. Toru’s house.

Even if it was an incomplete combustion for us, it was a miracle that my bike had passed the customs within this week!

This was all because Mr. Toru never gave up on me.  His precise decision making skills and clear action lead us to here.

We had a meal next to the bike.
As a rider, this was a supreme time ^^!

“Have you had any other countries that have been this troublesome?” Mr. Toru and his wife asked me. “You’re going to dislike Australia, aren’t you?” they continued.

I answered to them.

“Yes, it’s stressful, but it makes my journey very memorable. It would make it a better journey!”

Thinking back at the last fourteen months, I don’t have any contemplation about the places that I didn’t have any trouble.

I find life worth living when I suffer and face the hardships. I keep a positive attitude and never give up and overcome each of my problems.

This way, each moment will make vivid and beautiful memories.
