#WORLD DREAM TOURING

South Africa(南アフリカ)

The first country is Namibia which I've started to go up north in Africa.
I had been driving the national road which I can see rugged mountains both of the side. Although my original schedule was due to aim at the Fish River Canyon (Namibia) today from Springbok (O'kep), that was skipped and I arrived Keepmanshoop.
I wanted to go Fish River Canyon also but I found out the location of the hotel currently arranged on the night of the previous day, and the route from Springbok was checked then the shortest distance was investigated, it also turned out that a possibility that the way is lost on the way is high.
I got the info from the hotel which I planned to stay and it said the road might be closed this season, and also when I avoid the way, the way of the point is not showed of a way with Michelin's paper map across the country border considerably, either. Moreover, for the information from the hotel, even if there was the way, when it comes from the direction, it is written that it cannot pass along it if the distance to a hotel is not 4WD vehicles, and it takes time fairly.
If I consider that the time arrival becomes dark even if I leave Springbok for very early morning, it will not be a best idea to reach by force to this schedule at which I have only an overnight stay.
Moreover, I will take a remarkable risk.

I asked myself that "what is my purpose for this journey?" and I decided that I give up on Fish River Canyon.

「Good Bye, South Africa!」

I left South Africa and the process for getting into Namibia was going smoothly.
When I leave South Africa at the first gate, I was given one small form which has 3 frames.
I had to get a stamp at  each frame and give it to an officer at the last gate.
Maybe it is the feature of the South Africa departure-from-a-country border.
When I entered South Africa, one officer said that I don't need the carnet but I thought I will be in trouble when I departure this country, so I asked him to put the stamp on it.
This time, there was a process for being stamped at the carnet on a routine basis.
When I think about what was it happened if I didn't get it when I have entered the country, I feel scared. I cross the bridge of the border concerning a larger river. And I shout

"Good Bye, South Africa!"

On the Namibia entrance-into-a-country border, although I was charged 130ND (Namibia dollar) by the frontier tax of the motorbike, 100 dollars was received, when I said that I have only US dollar currency.

Namibia!!」

Safely I came across the border and entered Namibia then I shout "Hello Namibia!!"

I was having hard time with strong wind from the direction of Cape Town while I was driving.
The weather is great but the wind is like having hurricane warning and it makes me and motorbike shake. Since the rear load is further increasing and the front is light, especially I feel scared of strong wind.

Keetmanshoop which I arrived today seems fun town even it is small.
I went to a gas station to look for the lodge which I've booked then suddenly the power blackout.
I cannot fill gas to my motorbike.
I arrived at the lodge,  put all my stuff to my room and unpack the stuff.
After that I took shower, did my laundry, went to the downtown for getting necessary things and exchange currency. (South Africa's currency and Namibia's are same rate, so I can use South African currency while I'm in Namibia.) I can see some white people in the downtown but definitely getting decreased the number.

I was said that I can use internet when I booked the lodge but although I caught Wi-Fi, I needed to buy a voucher ticket at a store before I use.
When I found out about it, the selling hours was over, so I couldn't upload the article today either.

When I went to the restaurant in the lodge, there were 3 people who look like Japanese.
Our eyes met each other but we came through. When I finished my meal, I talked to them.

"Nihao!" (lol) They expressed "we are not Japanese" by means of gestures, so I said "I knew it. You are Japanese, aren't you? It's rare." They are   from JICA (The Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers.) and live in Keetmanshoop and Windhoek. It was the first time for me to talk with Japanese sine I came to Africa. I thank them that I could get information about the route for Sesriem.

I could hear the raining sound when I try to go to bed. And getting strong. And more. Then next is the thunder. *bitter smile* And got struck by lightning near here... Well, can I depart here safely tomorrow?

Finally I have started to move toward to the north in Africa!

One person spoke to me in the gas station of the highway which escaped from Cape Town. He said  "Are you going up North from Cape Town? Since Ivan McGregor and others were "LONG WAY Down" which drove from Libya to Cape Town, you are "LONG WAY Up"! They drove this way."

Although I'm still in South Africa, the atmosphere has been changing when I'm going up to the north. There are few towns and people are not walking along either. Sleepiness attacks considerably at me for the scene which hardly changes. I've been moving toward to the equator, and it's already been VERY hot! While I was driving today, the highest temperature became up to 38℃! There are also many towns on the way and the scene was also able to be completed to the destination until now in many cases, so I didn't get bored while I was driving but I felt so long driving today.Oh well... When I make a stop for my break time at a shade under a tree, there are always flies.  When I'm coming close to get to Namibia, those are increasing. Why?

I arrived today's hotel which is located suburban of Springbok and called O'Kelp and it is the lodge. [O'Kelp Country Hotel: $65 including breakfast] Here was the town which prospered before about 60 years in the coal mine shaft, many pictures which make that time recollect have decorated many places in the hotel. Although it seems that it has gone out of use considerably now, it is a place which seems to be quiet and be gentle also as for people.

I'm coming into Namibia tomorrow.

I was said that I can use internet service around the fron desk area when I booked the hotel, so I came to that area then they offered me to use their computer.(lol) Very kind. But it doesn't support Japanese so I couldn't do anything. Normally I can tweet but I cannot this time. I don't know why though. Well, I was said that I can use internet in the rodge in Beaufort West, so I asked the lady at the front that "I was said that I can use internet.", then she said "Yes. An internet cafe is across the street. :-)"... It's too funny!

I had dinner at the lodge. The waiter asked that "what would you like to drink?" I don't drink alcohol, so I ordered green tea then he asked me "with moke?" So I asked him that "what is moke?" He couldn't explain it so brought it to me. It was MILK. (lol) It is hard to listen African English for me sometime. And they categorize green tea same as black tea that is interesting.

DSCF2159

It was hard to decide what to have for dinner, so I asked him the recommendation. then he said that "ram neck" is famous dish in Springbok, so I ordered it. It was great!

Today is the day that I can receive my motorbike! I get up 4:30 in the morning as usual and do office work until the time of breakfast.
Actually there are many office work.
It is arrangements of hotels and checking of the route that time is taken most.
It becomes the greatest enemy to get lost for my trip which goes by the tight schedule.
I have to prepare well.

While I'm staying in Capetown, I wash my usual clothes and my riding bottom which is getting smelly (lol). Since the operation manual directions from Rough & Road were attached so that dry cleaning might be avoided, I decided to use ordinary laundry service in the hotel.
I'm so happy that it came back to me very clean.
I passed through many inside of the river in Francistown by motorbike from Bulawayo especially and it was muddy, so it refreshed.
When I go to the dealer of BMW at the taking over time of my motorbike, it is stand by as my motorbike has started the engine.
Then, Shane came out exactly from the shop and said to me, "I go to a test drive."
And also he said "The rear suspension is new one! :-)"
Shane who has long arms and legs rides my motorbike and went out for testing.
Once he comes back, he brings one mechanic and adjust detail of it.
When they adjust the tension of a chain, they attach the removed pannier case to it purposely, and carry out by a load stacking.
Their contents of work are exact anyhow and it is quick!
I thought that a dealer from here is lazy and so slow if I compare with Japanese one but I was totally wrong! They move and work so quick and are done work from one to the next and it made me surprised.
And I realized they have very good
attitude toward helping and taking care of the customer and there are many people who have high personal qualities.
I think that it is influence of a competitive society.
The workers of Cape Town are said for the median of a monthly income to exceed 300,000 yen.
I also looked at the newest Ferrari in a town twice.

They've done the maintenance for my motorbike perfectly, then I'm reluctant to part from them and leave the shop.
Everyone say "Have a safe trip! Take care! Please come back here again!" to me.
For me, while I was in the motorbike shop, I feel like I'm in home and don't feel I'm in foreign country but once I go out from there, I feel I'm in South Africa.
When I stopped at a red light, one white guy asked me "You are from Japan?"
It seems that people understands immediately by the "J" mark stuck on my motorbike.
I drove to DHL office which is 9 km away from the motorbike shop today due to send the package to Japan. It is 18 km for the round trip.
I asked to the hotel clerk that "I want to send my package to Japan so could please tell me DHL location?" then the clerk told me that DHL which is the closest distance from the hotel so I went there.
It was good distance for checking my motor bike after the maintenance.
When I arrived at DHL officeand finished the process for my package, I asked the staff that there is no DHL near by Seapoint which is my hotel, right? then the staff told me that there is one just 5 min away by walk.
It teaches me a good lesson.
When I search something, I should get information from a number of people.

Finally I leave Capetown and go to Springbok which is the last city in South Africa tomorrow.
I will leave early morning tomorrow because the distance is more than 500 km.
Due to my early departure tomorrow, I went to Japanese restaurant for having early dinner after I completed of checking up my motorbike.
Then the serving meals are very late here... there is Udon noodle and Yakitori in the menu, so I ordered those.
I waited about 30 mins then Udon noodle came.
But this is definitely not Udon (lol) I finished to eat Udon then Yakitori came.
But it was a big meal, so I couldn't finish!!
I feel very sorry but I left it some.
I feel also sorry to Second Harvest.(lol)
Since I came here, I'm into one thing. It's coke.
Taste of foods have strong flavor, so coke match with those.
It might just be me but when I come getting south in Africa, flavor is getting strong.
It's like Kyushu in Japan.

When I walked alone in the town, I was said "Nihao". Chinese greeted me this time.
I can see many Chinese people in South Africa.
And I hardly see Japanese.
I felt that it would be the scenery that this also tells the wave of a time, and the international situation.

And it is very stron win at night in Capetown.
I can hear various sounds that many kinds of things fall down or  over near by the hotel, and it's like a typhoon day every night.
When I've driven at one evening, I couldn't drive straight sometimes.

→ http://justgiving.jp/c/799

South Africa] Trip from Kimberley to Beaufort West

There was no store of diamonds that it was unexpected in Kimberley. I can find common jewelry stores for souvenirs often such as a tourist resort though. If there is a diamond shop, I would buy diamonds for all of you who have read this blog but unfortunately there isn't!!! lol

それからこのキンバリーの町にはBMWのバイクの専門店があるそうです。時間があれば行きたかった^^;
Wayco Spares (Pty) Ltd  5 1st Ave , Industrial Site, Mafikeng 2745, South Africa

And it is said that the specialty store of the motorbike of BMW is located in Kimberley. I wanted to go if I could have time. ;-/ Moreover, although I thought that I would do tire exchange in a town called Mafikeng which is between Gaborone and Kimberley, since it was still likely to maintain, I did not drop in, but automobile-related stores in this town was very substantial. I heard that the following address is a specialty store of the tire shop for motorbikes.
Wayco Spares (Pty) Ltd 5 1st Ave , Industrial Site, Mafikeng 2745, South Africa

Before I leave the town, I dropped by a gas station, and there are many white staff. It is Africa and tells that it is not Africa. That's South Africa.

Well, while I was driving this time, I felt sleepy. The road is so good that I feel relieved very much to drive, and since many road service pursuers are working, there are also few falling objects or hit animals on the road. Although it is not a barren ground, the desolate ground continues endlessly. Moreover, blue of the sky becomes increasingly deep. I felt that the color is similar to Mediterranean. On the way, there is the rail track on the side of the highway. Since Kimberley is an arrival-and-departure station of the Blue Train, I thought that it would be the track from there. But I've not a train which runs on a rail track since I came to Africa though.

When I arrived at Beaufort West, the atmosphere is totally changed. It's reminiscent of South Europe. This town is a tourist resort where the church of the convert of the Netherlands is famous and I can see it very closely from the lodge that I stayed.

A lady from the lodge said "Here is safe area even you walk alone at night." Actually even if I walk along the town, there are less people who look at me because I'm Japanese as unlike other countries, so I don't feel uncomfortable. Well, when I went to a supermarket in Gaborone, I told the middle-age lady from the Deli here that I came from Japan then she said "Nihao" to me. (lol) I said "Well, it's Chinese. " then she said "I thought Japanese and Chinese are same." *surprise* I thought at that time that not only I give kid's interviews but also I need to ask to grownups that "Please tell me about Japan that you know."
