HOTEL MITURU

It is very comfortable staying in this hotel even if the inside of the hotel made with salt.
Especially the bed, it is very comfy.

Most of today’s pictures were taken by Mr. Tsukada.

The pictures I took were only a few from on top of bike.
Thank you very much, Mr. Tsukada!

Pole in lobby, front desk counter, chairs, and fireplace are all made with salt in this hotel.

They were very fun people.
They were very kind and cared about me on my journey.

Let’s go!!!
5

I followed the Toyota that Oscar drove.  He is only around 22 years old!
6

I felt so good without any stress!
I already knew at this point that I could enjoy Uyuni!

8

I was able to listen to the guide, Oscar, explaining about each view point.
10

This is a memory tower.
12 travelers including 5 Japanese people died here in tragic accident in 2008.  Two four wheel drive vehicles had head-on collision. The tower is a message reminding people of the risk of the open area without roads.
I pray their soul may rest in peace.

This is the first time to do sightseeing with somebody else since I started this journey.
11

I felt like I was in a traveling tour, we took pictures of each other (haha).
I like this kind of traveling sometimes.

The hotel in salt flat, Playa Blanca, they let me put my WDT sticker.
Please look for my sticker when you visit there! ^^

We drove west on the salt for while.
We were able to drive in 120 kilometers in good ground conditions!

Words cannot describe these pictures.

I just couldn’t believe that I was actually there.

These views are like heaven, and are only available in certain conditions.

It becomes visible when a still thin layer of water on the ground evaporates.

And this happens only in the rainy season.

I was very moved yesterday, but today was 100 times better.

I have to admit that I did not believe it completely when I reached South America.  Before I started the journey, and middle of my journey I never thought I would get here.

However, I did arrive here that is 70,000 kilometers away from Japan at last.

Amazingly, I met people who were willing to take pictures of me riding on my journey; the best highlighted spot, Uyuni.  This is nothing but miracle.
36

This car is my guide and saved my life.

Mr. Tsukada continued taking pictures willingly for me.

37

At this point… tear… tear…

This is very first time to ride with a Japanese person behind me on my bike on my journey.
24

I won’t forget this moment (tandem) for the rest of my life.
38

“Please watch with HD” Mr. Tsukada said while he was filming.

This is “Island of the fish” we arrived after driving 80 kilometers to west from the hotel; it is at the edge of salt flat.
39

The island has coupe thousand wild cacti.

41

42

Three of us climbed up to the top of the island.
There were many coral rocks on the ground, and it’s telling us that this area was once an ocean.
This was the moment that I felt like I experienced history while I was completely surrounded by white salt flat.

We headed to Tunupa Volcano next.
This was located on north side of salt flat.
Four wheel drive car and a silver bike accomplished driving more than 100 kilometers while passing each other.

43

With Mr. and Mrs. Tsukada and also Oscar who saved my life.
We made a strong promise to meet each other again when we visit Bolivia.

There is Tunupa Volcano and village at the foot of the mountain in the background.
I was told that there was a hiking trail to top of the mountain, two mummies were left there.
We decided not go in there since we have a tight schedule.

There were many deep puddles in this area since it is at the foot of mountain and receives a lot of rain.
44

We decided to go back to our hotel, so drove about 100 kilometers without stopping.
Surprisingly, I drove about 270 kilometers on the salt flat in only two days.

My bike was covered with salt.
*No one could expect the things, because of this situation, would happen later.

Oscar offered to go get my bike washed before I leave Uyuni tomorrow.
He is such a kind person.

We saw one head light coming towards to us when we went out to salt flat in the evening.

It was a bike.

This is a common rule among riders that we parked our bike next to each other, and got off our bikes, and shook hands firmly.
IMG_6346

We started talking about our journey.

Mr. Tsukada who is a rider in Japan said the following when he saw us talking

“Riders are mysterious.  This situation won’t happen if both of you were in cars!”

Exactly! I love this moment.
We respect each other as riders, praying for each other’s good luck.  We took a picture.

IMG_6360

He is a Swedish rider, Marcus.
He’s been filming with his camera that is attached to his helmet while he’s riding.  He is broadcasting his movie on YouTube.
He was really funny guy.
I hope that I will see him somewhere again.

We went to see the salt production which we haven’t seen yet.  They were so kind to take me there.
IMG_6393

Workers were packing salt in a bag by hand in a small warehouse.
This nostalgic view is another taste of Uyuni.

Uyuni was the best of the best spot in my journey. By this miracle meeting, this journey was filled with blight salt flakes on the pure salt flats.

I was not sure who I was more thankful for.  However, I was grateful that I received gifts for living in this world.  I just felt so grateful for everything today.

【Bolivia】 Oruro to Uyuni

December 22nd, 2011 (Thursday)
Distance: 310 kilometers
Departure: 07:00
Arrival: 13:00
Weather: Sunny

I woke up early with excitement to head to Uyuni today.
From the capital La Paz to Oruro are suppose to have a good road conditions according to most of the information I received.  However, I became nervous because the rest of the road after Oruro is supposed to get bad.

When I asked the hotel staff after I parked my bike, if it’s ok to leave at 6:00 am tomorrow morning?  “It’s no, problem”.  The hotel staff replied.

I was surprised when I went to the parking lot after checking out of the hotel.
There were many cars parked behind my bike, so I couldn’t get out!

I asked the hotel staff to move all the cars.  They called the owners of the cars, and sleepy owners came outside to move their cars.
Some people complained to me, but I didn’t mind.

I managed to leave Oruro by 7:00am!

The road became dirt as the information stated, after I drove for while.
no title

I didn’t mind the hard dirt, but I had to be cautious in the deep sand area.

What?!
It’s river!  Yes, a river!
I haven’t seen a river this vast since Africa!
Some roads were underwater because of the rainy season.

1

There were some trucks that couldn’t move on the other side of the river.  They seemed like they were waiting for the chance to cross the river.

One of the truck drivers told me where to cross, while I was thinking what I needed to do.

There was an area that it looked not deep at glance.  I was going just go with my bike trusting the driver.  However, I decided to make sure by wading in like I did in Africa just in case.

When I took the 10th step in to the river…

ズボッ!!Oh No!

My foot got stuck!

It was a muddy area because of the soft sand.

I had a hard time to pull my foot out of it.

Water and sand started coming inside of my boot.

It took for while to pull my foot out and I managed to go back to the shore where I started from.

It would be a really bad situation if I went with my bike.

It is always good thing to check it by walking.

One of the truck drivers advised me to use the railroad next.  (On the left side of the picture)

I saw some local people pushing a bicycle on the railroad.

I found out that the size of the railroad was the only area I could use to cross the river when I took a closer look.
On top of that, the gap of each railroad tie was wide.  If I miss the step, that’s it.
A train might come while I’m crossing?!

Meanwhile, one truck and an ATV crossed the river.
Both vehicles crossed the same area.
I walked the same area in the river.  The depth was below the knees, and the ground was hard and firm.

The stream was not fast, so I decided to cross in this area.

I crossed the river successfully while truck drivers were looking at me with support!

I raised my hand to greet them, and head to Uyuni.

The road conditions became worse, it was a washboard.  My driving pace decreased.

However, the distance was not too far, so I took my time to drive.

I encountered Lamas and Alpacas at 4,000 meters.  I also saw wiled Vicunas.  Vicunas were running fast like deer unlike Lamas and Alpacas.  I had fun racing them with my bike.

Winding up and down and right and left on dirt made me tired.

I saw the edge of while mother earth after I drove the harsh road conditions.

It is a Salar de Uyuni!

At this moment, my tiredness disappeared!

I continued driving about 30 kilometers and my destination was getting closer.
My destination was a salt hotel build on top of hill, and it is called “Hotel Luna Salada”.

I came to the place with a sign of the hotel, next to dirt express way.
According to GPS, the hotel is supposed to be at 90 degrees east from where I was.
I saw slight trace of car in middle of the desert.
Do I need to follow this path!?
It looked like I didn’t have a choice even if the road didn’t look like a road.
I need to cross over the railroad track to go to the hotel.

The hotel was getting closer, it was in my view!

I made it!

The hotel was located on the hill, and it was about three to four kilometers away from the white mother earth.
I thought someone would come out to greet me since I made the reservation beforehand. However, there was nobody. No one came out when I went inside and kept calling.
I started unloading my gear off the bike, and eating some snacks I had for lunch while sitting on the bench outside of the hotel.  When I about to finished eating, the hotel staff came out of nowhere.

I was able to check in safely!
I felt relieved.

I wanted to go see salt lake since I got to the destination earlier than I thought!
However, I was not sure where to start since salt lake was huge.

I asked the hotel staff where the recommended places in salt lake were, but they didn’t speak English.

I was not expecting this situation.
There are some islands in salt lake that it is good for sightseeing, but how I’m going to get there?

Nothing is going to happen even if I stay here and think, so I decided to get on my bike and head to the white mother earth!

Ohhhh!

This is really salt mother earth!!

It was different from Salt Flats in Utah, USA!
Not only vast, but also it has a South American characteristic it is located on high field, with pure air, and a deep blue sky.

The size is 100 kilometers to south and north, and 250 kilometers to east and west.
It has not only the largest amount of salt in the world, but also more than half of amount of lithium on the earth  for electric cars is buried here.

There were many spots that were covered by water.  I needed to go further to see the area that it was completely dry and a white mother earth.

I saw some cars and people in salt lake, and thought they were travelers.  However, they were mining salt.

I couldn’t see anybody and anything when I looked forward.
I was very nervous, but I kept going.

The reason why I was nervous was because there were neither roads nor signs.

It would be better if I have the point that travelers usually go in my GPS.   I didn’t even have that.
I started thinking about having bad situation like getting stuck in mud at salt lake.  This is the hard part when I travel by myself.

While I kept driving thinking about this kind of thing, I saw a clean white Toyota track coming towards to me.  It stopped right next to me.

運転手が窓を開けて「May I help you?(何か困っている?)」
The driver rolled down the window and said to me, “May I help you?”

His voice was like an angel’s voice in this situation.

And I found out that there was a Japanese couple in his car!
The driver was a Japanese travel guide, Oscar.
He was very handsome; he looked like the combination of Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves.

He showed me the way of the place I wanted to go in my GPS.
This picture was taken by Mr. Tsukada who was a husband of the Japanese couple.

Surprisingly, Mr. and Mrs. Tsukada were both riders loved bikes.  Mr. Tsukada is a bike rider, and Mrs. Tsukada got a bike license recently because of his influence.

Oscar was also a rider and loved bikes.

It was a miracle to meet group of people who all love bikes.  They were very kind to me.
As we talked more, we found out that we were all staying in the same hotel.

そして、
And also,

“We are going to tour in Salt Lake tomorrow.  Why don’t you join us?  You are welcome to follow our car”.  They said.

Another angel’s voice!  AWwwww

I accepted their kind offer and will join them tomorrow.
We said good bye to each other.

I arrived in the renowned hotel where in salt lake, Playa Blanca, after I drove the direction that Oscar showed me.
This was different from our hotel.  Our hotel is on the top of the hill.

This hotel lingered in the pure mother earth, and built with salt except for the roof.
It is very popular hotel, but it was crumbling.  To tell the truth I didn’t want stay there.

There were many flags in front of the hotel.

Yay!
I made it to Uyuni!!
When I saw the Japanese flag, something warm inside me welled up.

I arrived in the area where it was surrounded by salt 360 degrees.  I was in middle of the mother earth.

I accepted Mr. and Mrs. Tsukada’s offer, and had a dinner with them.

I was moved by their great personality.

Distance:230キロ
Departure time:10:15am
Arrival time:14:30pm
Weather:Blue skies with occasional showers
Temperature:7℃

No matter what, I'm really pleased that the bike is back in good health!!
Even if I drive free handed in doesn't waver. That's the way I like it!

And then, the 'Engine Stop' phenomenon that start in Chivay is apparently caused be the high altitude. The BWM dealer said that this happens even with 4 cylinder machines.

All in order, so off I go!
… or that's what I thought. The traffic in La Paz is really pretty bad.
1

Construction works, the driving manners and skills, traffic order … what ever it is, it is in the process of developing.
To leave the down centre behind me, it took me nearly an hour.

A straight road, and I'm headed towards Uyuni!!
2

At an altitude of close to 4000 meters over sea level, the Altiplano (tableland) is going on and on and on.
It starts raining and gets cold quite suddenly. In addition, the road is monotonous, and I start to get tired.

Arrival in Oruro.
As a result of the rain there are small floodings all over the place.
Will Uyuni be OK???
3

(HOTEL PLAZA)
Well, for now, I proceed to the town centre, and step into a 3 star hotel.
There are rooms available, there is WiFi, breakfast is included. For a total of 210 Bolivianos (2300 yen).
And as I check it, for some reason, it was the suite!
Might have been that no one was using it. (HOTEL PLAZA)

After a late lunch / early dinner, I go down town.

I even get to think that it's not the worst place in Bolivia so far, with respect to people begging in the streets.
But then within a few dozen meters, children, elderly and handicapped people holding out their hands to beg for alms appeared one after the other.
4

Right, up until here.
Every time I see abroad something like this, and which is considered completely normal, I really get to think that Japan is a miracle.

Oruro is surrounded by mines, and has a population of 220'000 inhabitants. The city doesn't really have much to see, and even the cathedral just next to the 10th-of-February square is simple.
5

I get something to eat at a restaurant a few steps away from the square.
On the way, and because it was a bit of an odd time, a lot of places where already closed.
I order a hamburger – it's been a while since I had one.
Together with fresh papaya juice, it costs me 25 Bolivianos (280 Yen).

Since I want to head of really early tomorrow morning, I won't be eating the hotel breakfast. I hence go to shop for bred for breakfast before returning to the hotel.

Tomorrow I'm going to the salt lake of Uyuni. I was looking forward to coming here even before leaving from Japan. It is a highlight among highlights in South America.

There's a probability that I will stay overnight where there is no internet available, so there is a good chance that I would be able to upload anything for a few days.

And in this context, a bit early, but: Merry Christmas everyone!

I pray that everyone will be able to have a good time, and a smile on their face.

La Paz, Bolivia
12/20/2011 Tue.

When I called Carlos from the local BMW dealership, he said my motorcycle would be ready by 630pm.
So I extended my stay at the hotel one more night.

I noticed one missed call on my cell phone.
That was from Kimbasa who lives in Bowanza, Congo which is as tiny as it is not even on a map.
I spent 4 days with him while I stayed there and we are best friends now.
There is no internet service in his area, so we keep in touch over the phone.
He tries to speak English, but Congo people speak French, so it is difficult to communicate in our second language, English.
Is there any French speaker who can interpret for us?
Every time I talk to him, I cry.
I guess because the trip in the West Africa was very much adventurous and intense experience to me.

I am going out to town for a walk and interviewing local kids for my project in the afternoon.
The town is festive from the Christmas week.

I wonder if they are sisters.

They perform lovely dance and singing to make money from people.
My heart ached to see the kids working so hard.
I wanted to interview them for my project, but they were too young.

I went places I could walk to because my motorcycle was in the shop.

There is a street, called Witches Market across the street, and I see a lot of strange things in the shops.

She was 11 years old and alone watching the shop.
It was my first time to do this without interpreters or references all by myself, but it turned out successful.
I was shocked what she talked about though.
I will write about it soon.

Basilica de San Francisco
Places with the name are almost everywhere.

7

La Paz is a very chaotic and busy place, but inside the church is so peaceful.

I feel its dignity.
8

The front altar is filled with beautiful decoration.
9

I have seen Jesus statues and sculptures many times in other places, but I have never seen so real one like this.

I could not help taking a photo of this beautiful police officer.

I was a little hungry, so I bought a Bolivian hotdog.
There is a sausage in it just like regular hot dogs, but instead of buns they use something like fried egg roll wraps.
I put some ketchup, mustard, and chili sauce.
5 bolivianos (about 50 yens)
It tasted good!

There was her parent in the shop and accepted my interview offer.

Later I heard that she is native and came down from very poor area, outskirts of La Paz.

I got a very special voice from this child.

It was about time to visit the dealership shop.
I got a taxi ride about 5km and paid 15 Bolivian (150yens)
Things are cheaper in this country. I heard Bolivia is the cheapest to buy things in the South America.

14

It is a smaller and conservative looking dealership.

Motorcycle shop area.
15

This place was the smallest dealership of all the others I have visited before.
The services were to change the on-road tires that I carried from Lima to off-road tires, to repair the brake pedal which was bent at the parking lot in Chivay, Peru (I didn’t even know how that happened.), to repair steering shake problem, and to find out the cause of engine stop that was frequent on the road between Chivay and La Paz.

The steering shake was finally fixed!
It is impressive considering the size of the La Paz shop!!!
It was completed by replacing head bearing that was causing the problem.

With the shop man, Carlos.

He translated the interviews filmed today!
I appreciated his help.

I went back to the hotel, and prepared the motorcycle for the next day in the parking lot.
Then I was headed to “Ken-chan Restaurant.”

WOW! This tastes so good!

Tomorrow I am leaving La Paz, and going to Uyuni.
It is going to take more than one day to get to Uyuni, so I will stay in Oruro which is a half way to the place.

The view of La Paz from the window at the hotel.
1

I go to BMV dealer for maintenance from the morning today.

Since the way in La Paz being complex and ups and downs are intense, I cannot go to the destination smoothly so I have rough time.
There are many places like suddenly it is the end of the road and cliff.

I grumble myself then finally I could arrive.

It is the dealer carried out in a small way, so that I forget to take pictures carelessly.
In Bolivia which is not rich, I can tell that it has low demand for BMV from the size of this store.
And even the hotel people that I stay and it's 5 star hotel doesn't know about BMW...

Carlos who is in charge of service can speak English and very kind.
I tell him my request of maintenance contents and also troubles which my motorbike have now.
He told me that he will let me know complete time of the maintenance and I leave my motorbike there.

I went back to the hotel and did my document works, and after that I go to the town for having lunch and giving interview.

The horn of taxi calling in resounds even in La Paz.
2

Moreover, doormen is telling the destination with very loud voice.
Passengers listen the voice or see the destination sign at front glass and come into a taxi.
Probably, this is indispensable as a true symbol of La Paz.

道端にあるのでどっから回線を? と思ったら電柱から線をひいていました^^;
I was wondering where do they bring the line then they bring from telephone pole.
Is that legal?

It's student open space in  Av.16 de Julio.
3

Although it is an open space for gathering various people or kids who beg for something, sell something, relax and foreign people who are sightseeing, Bolivians do not care about others' thing. If we get used to it, it might comfortable to stay.

I had shoe shining today.
When I started this journey, I thought that it was ”No Way!" to have people to polish my shoes.
Especially little kids came to me, I felt so sorry.
But I ask them to do it now if I need it.
Because even this little money (it's 2Bs in La Paz.) will be very important their cost of living.

I can see a family who see a show window of a toy store in the town with Christmas music.
And there is a family with kids for begging in front of them.

I exchange e-mail with my wife about Christmas presents of my kids today.

Lots of feelings come out from me on Christmas week in Bolivia.

However, it is a support of my heart to travel in the contribution to Second Harvest which continues carrying foods to families which become destitute in food every day.
And I am very grateful to many people who consent to this project more than anything.
Contributing has saved ourselves most.

The Ken-chan restaurant is closed today, so I go to other Japanese restaurant.

I order a combo menu of curry with deep flied pork!
5

Wow, it big!
Although the main dish of curry with deep flied pork was ok taste, Japanese pickle and miso soup are great!
It's about 700 JPY.

Carlos doesn't call me even it turns to the night.
Hmmm... is it alright?
Let's try to check tomorrow morning.
So I have to change to extend one more day to stay here.

Although I tried to give an interview when I walked around the town today, the kids fitted the interview age but they cannot speak English.
There is nobody to do translate in rest of South American countries including Bolivia.

I need to look for people who can cooperate, but I want to give interviews in Spanish without an interpreter.
Then, I made the slide which I can just show this when I give an interview.

6

This slide was made by my supporter before I started this journey.
Moreover, I made a slide which I talked to people in Spanish for first step with using translating application.

I'm getting used to Spanish because from middle to South American countries people speak almost only Spanish.

Well, kid's interviews in the remaining countries will be more fun!

Puno (Peru) - La Paz (Bolivia) Trip

Sunday, December 18th, 2011
Distance: 310 km
Starting time: 7:10
Arrival time: 15:00 (Time difference +1hr)
Weather: Fine with occasional rain
Temperature: 4℃ - 14℃

I will leave Peru today.
Many tourists visit and enjoy the float island in Lake Titicaca in Puno.

1

When I went to the harbor in the morning, many tourist ships and fishing boats were preparing the departure.
Since today is Sunday, there is also a market and so active!

I drive like 1.5 hour and arrive in the town Yunguyo of the border.
This border is in the peninsula overhanging into Lake Titicaca.

The procedure of entrance into a country and departure from a country  in the border was finished very smoothly.

I saw so many tourists especially the people from Europe, and also Japanese people here.
I feel South American popularity and  good public safety and order.

I pass through the town of the border and drive along the lakeside!

Good-bye, Peru,  Hello,  Bolivia!!

Finally I achieved 60 countries!!!!
写真

I can't believe that I've driven around the earth and 60 countries.

What I can say about this lakeside is great.
2

Continuation of sighs
3

The color of sky and lake water are amazing!
It's  incredible deep blue.
The color is like Cote d'Azur in South France.

Though I've already crossed the border, I have to go across Tiquina Channel which crosses Lake Titicaca for going to real Bolivia.

Although it is in the middle of the main trunk road which connects Bolivia to Peru, there is neither a tunnel nor a bridge.
Since I was not able to find the information on the boarding method in advance, I was little anxious, but when I went there, the middle age man who was near the harbor said,

"Ride that on!"

and he pointed it out.

"Whar?! Which one?!"

About a ticket for boarding or something..?

A young man try to do gesture which says like "hurry up! hurry up!", so I go over there then one car has already been in the wooden boat.
4

Wow, this is it!

By the very unstable floor, my motorbike became breaking down from a shock in case a boat leaves for a moment. Scary...
5

Cast off safely!

6

With local(?) people.

7

Many boats are going Peru and Bolivia side back and forth.
In the same state, what stacked 2 cars is going to Peru side as I have ridden.

8

What?!
9

Oh I see, when tourists cross the border by the land rout, they will do like this.

Though I've been in the boar about 15 min, I felt so great!
When we become close to arrival, a boat man come to charge us.
It's 20Bs. (200 JPY)

When I arrived the lakeside of Bolivia, it's close by lunch time, so I have a lunch at cafe.
9−1

I order a recommendation menu from the cafe as usual.
First, it's Chairo as traditional Bolivian food.
It's a soup with beans, potatoes, vegetables and beef.
It's taste good.

9−2

Since which country is it that bread comes as  side dish automatically?
9−3

It's called Guiso de carne and cooked with macaroni, veges and ram.
It's taste good too.
With soda, it's 15Bs (170 JPY).
Prices of Bolivia are cheap.

I pass through wonderful view of lakeside and drive the highlands called Altiplano.
Since I drive the altitude of around 4000 m,  the temperature turns around 10 ℃, so it' cold.

Traffic jam starts in the place run about 100 km from the lakeside.
Around there is La Paz.
Although Sucre is a capital on the constitution, since government functions have centered in La Paz, it is known as a capital of substance.

Well, it's heavy traffic jam!
10

I cannot move...
11

Since it is in the circumference about the 6000m mountains in Andes, the town is like an earthenware mortar.
12

Population is 1.1million people, and altitude is 4000 m at a higher place and  3600 m for lower place which is the center of the twon.

It gives the poverty of Bolivia that there are many people who is begging at side of a road and old model of cars.

But people are good looking, so there are many beautiful and cute women!

When I visit Plaza Hotel, there is a vacancy of room as $90 per night.
Although it's 5 stars hotel, it's 7000 JPY per night!
If it is in Japan, it will be 30000 JPY per night.

There is a famous Japanese restaurant for local people near my hotel.
13

The restaurant which is "KEN-Chan" is at 3rd floor in Japanese hall.

It's completely Japanese restaurant!
14

First,  dumplings!
Yes, it's good!

15

"Stamina Ramen"
If I am in Japan, probably it's OK taste, but I've not had Japanese Ramen since Vancouver, so it's VERY tasty! and I ate at once.

I expected that there is an owner who is similar to Ken Shimura who is a Japanese comedian from the name of the restaurant, but it seems there is no Japanese owner and only some local Bolivian people work there.
Too bad.

I could see some Japanese who probably live there.
Bolivia is also a town with many migrants from Japan.

I will stay in La Paz for few days, and I'm going to do maintenance of the motorbike and prepare for further things.

Good-bye, Peru,  Hello,  Bolivia!!

怖え=。
5
